something clicks

When I am trying to start my truck something in the engine compartment just clicks and it wont start, how ever if I turn the key really fast several times(like 15 times or so) it will start with out hesitation, so what is the clicking is it because of a the solinoid on the firewall or something else, if it is is there some way to test it.

Remove, clean, & tighten both battery terminal clamps. If they're corroded, stretched, or otherwise damaged, replace them.

you can bypass the solenoid to see if it will start / turn over.

1) Make sure the truck is in Park!!!
2) Turn the key to the On Position
3) Find your solenoid and jump the terminals with a screwdriver
a) only for a second you don't need to keep the screwdriver on there!!!
4) If the truck turns over / starts then you have found your problem.

Replace the solenoid, shouldn't be too expensive.

That will only make the starter spin - it won't engage the starter to the ring gear. For that, you have you jump the relay.

But his problem is at the battery - not the relay or solenoid.

I could be wrong, and please tell me if I am...

the clicking he is probably hearing is the solenoid click on the actual starter is it not??

In my experiences, if you jump the actual starter solenoid it should hit the relay and engage the starter?

Not 100% sure though... Thats why I love these forums, Helps me as much as anybody else!!!

Thanks!

well I looked at the terminals and the ground one is pretty mangled so I think that might be the problem so I am going to go ahead and buy the brass terminals so they dont get all bent outta shape

No, that's backward. The relay powers the solenoid. But the big terminals on the back of the solenoid don't, so if you jumper them, the solenoid doesn't engage. Study that diagram.
