Why does it want to stall? (351)

hey guys. have a 87 f150 here with 5.8. when first started in mornings, everytime you get on the brakes to slow down or stop the truck wants to stall out. once its at operating temperature i can sit on the brakes in drive and it idles fine without wanting to stall. any ideas on what i can do to fix this? thank you.

When did you last change the fuel filter? I'd do that if its been awhile and then I'd check the fuel pressure. After that spark plugs wires air filter etc.

no clue for any of that except we put in new sparkplugs. its an old beater farm truck, not mine but i usually end up working on it. the fuel filter could be a cause of that even though it runs fine once warmed up?

I wouldn't have said to check the fuel filter if I didnt think it would possibly help your symptoms. It sounds like you MAY have low pressure and once the pump warms up it can supply enough pressure. The fuel filter is a maintenance item no mater so it should be replaced every couple of years. My bet is it will clear your problem up. If it dont you just replaced a filter that needed replacing anyway. These are not perpetual machines. Next step would be a fuel pressure test.

Aha - you are probably on to something. I show that the 5.8 in the 87 F-150 has a 4 barrel carb. There are a few things that work in conjunction with the choke - the pulloff, dashpot, thermostat, and fast idle cam. Ignore my question about an IAC.

Not trying to be a smartass, but find someone who remembers how to work on a carb. There are several adjustments that all interact.
