2004 5.4L Cam Phaser Noise w/ Video Link
#17
Mine occasionally (not every time) makes a noise right at first cold start up after the truck sits overnight. The noise is the timing chain adjuster. It has leaked oil pressure and takes a second for it to build up pressure and function properly.
I found this info on the flat rate tech site. See my sig link, episode 22.

If anybody is still reading this thread. We made the mistake of purchasing a used 2004 F-150 with 58000 miles on it and it had that diesel sound. The dealer said they checked it out in their service department prior to sale and it was the injectors. (BIG mistake not pushing further)
I took it to their own service department and they said it was the cam phasers within an hour of dropping it off and upon further inspection found (they say)the chain was rubbing the cover and caused shavings to drop into the oil pan. They say it needs a new long block and will only provide $1500 towards the replacement cost of $5600. They now acknowledge the original service tech had concerns with the noise yet they put it up for sale anyways.
Did we get shafted? This is obviously a known issue just by reading all of the posts on this site and seeeing the TSB for this model years engine, should I pursue legal action or have them button it back up with new phasers and wait for the engine to fail? If so how long until this engine dies or siezes?
Do the 2006 5.4 triton V8's have the same phaser problems?
Any help is appreciated.

how long has it been? if it hasnt been long and since they had "concern" then I think its on them to fix it and pay for ALL of it. Mine has been ticking louder and louder and dealer says its normal and will do nothing so I will be taking it to a different dealer and see what they say. I have a warranty and I think they are dodging the issue cuz it is expensive to fix. And Im pretty sure I read that ford fixed this phaser issue with 2006 and newer f150's, but not completely sure...I have an 05

hey meaybe is gonna be the oil pump .,my truck is 2006 f-150 5.4 v3 .,i replacement the 2 cam sensor's,2 phaser's,2 vct solenoids,2 timing tensioner's,spark plugs, filter's ,oil and gas.when a start up at cold runs like a new engine after the truck warn it up start doing the diesel noise and shaking at 1200 rpm but if you push the gas pedal at 2000 rpm's or over the truck back to normal no noise o i check my oil pump at cold shows 60 psi preasure and when is hot shows 00000000 psi no oil preassure is 0 psi so when i push the pedal at 1200 rpm the truck start shaking and doing the diesel noise and the psi goes crazy like from 0 psi at 30 psi so my guess is bad oil pump.i will replacement the oil pump and i will hoppe this work them, other way alot a peopple say the full engine is clogged. so thats bad we need entire new engine.

My 2004 F-150 5.4 Lariat (117000 Miles) sounds exactly the same... Took it to the dealer yesterday and they said it needs to be repaired or it could cause damage to the engine. Tech said that the cam phasers and guides need to be replaced, $3000..... As long as it fixes the issues I can live with $3000. Anyone have this done and it it fix the issue and any more problems after getting the repair done?
