deciphering 97-98 4.6's?
 

Recently i bought a 97 f150 flareside 4x4 with the w vin code 4.6l. Been having a bit of trouble finding an engine for it, My dad had found someone with an engine out of a 98 f150 supercab, but he unfortunately scrapped the truck so he doesn't know whether its the romeo or not... is there a way to tell if its a romeo by looking at it? might be heading down there quite possibly this weekend to take a look at it. Also, Anything i should know about the truck... as in, compatible engines (if infact that one wont fit and i end up having to upgrade), recalls, anything else of the sort..

The engine build code label on the RH cam cover, as follows:
LIGHT TRUCK

6G 840 AA - Romeo 4.6L 2V engine
6G 870 AA - Windsor 4.6L 2V engine
6G 871 AA - Windsor 4.6L 2V engine

any 4.6 2v will bolt in without any mods needed. but if you get a 2001 and newer then you will need a new tune for the PI(performance improved) heads.

Just so you know the Romeo engine, vin W, has a 6 bolt crankshaft so the flywheel or flex plate must have 6 bolts. A Windsor, vin 6, has 8 bolts. If you swap engines try to get the Flywheel or flexplate with it.

well for right now just trying to find out what would be the cheapest option, out of a vehicle right now and the engines gone in the f150, Canadian Tire wants 1800 to fix it so i figure it would be cheaper to buy another engine. but where i am located there are next to no 4.6l romeo engines for sale and the ones that are they want an arm and a leg for. The one i was told about is rather high in kms (238,000) but for $350 if it will fit cant pass it up untill i find a half decently low km one for a fair price, there is a picture of it on Kijiji, Dont rightly know if anyone will be able to tell by the picture (most likely cant) but the link is

Do a search here for an engine http://car-part.com I would look up a 2000 with both the 6 and 8 bolt cranks. Search all of Ontario and when you call ask them how much to ship. While the 2000 model year uses coil on Plug ignition it still uses the Non Pi heads like your current engine. You can easily use your engine harness on this engine.

Don't they have different valve covers or something like that - count the bolts?

So i got ahold of the guy with the engine today, and he replied ". The code on this engine valve cover 7G912AA / has 8 bolts on flywheel." so from past replies my guess is that it wouldn't fit?

The engines use the same engine mounts and have the same bell housing bolt pattern. If you purchase a complete engine the only important difference is the crankshaft bolt pattern. There are two versions. Eight and six bolt. Ask your seller if he is selling the flexplate/flywheel with the engine. If he is then you can bolt the engine right in. If not you can either pass on the engine or purchase a new flexplate/flywheel form a parts store or a used one from a scrap yard.

Thanks for all your help so far, one more question for you tho. What would i be looking at for wiring harness? ive been told that i should watch because it could be different from the one in my truck.. Im thinking about picking up the engine and just buying a little more durable flexplate/flywheel for offroading. The only thing i was rather weary about was the fitting, Been told numerous things by numerous people about what fits what wont fit.. basically saying it HAS to be the same engine from a 97-98 4wd to fit in saying that it wont bolt up to my trans being as its the electonic 4wheel, but being "Ford Boy's" you might have a litle more insight into it. Is there anything i should look into changing while i have the engine out? anything problematic or tough to get at... i plan on changing plugs and wires.. all that sort of stuff.. because i remember on the 2000 my dad just bought the drivers rear 2 plugs are tucked under the fuel rail

Use the engine harness from your truck. You know that it works. God only knows what was done to the one on the truck. Besides it will force you to look over all the sensors and see any signs that they may be broken. Do you own a shop manual? If not get one. Besides when you plop that sucker in you will second guess yourself to death if it doesn't start.
