engine starts and idles for a good 30 seconds and then sputters and dies. Any Ideas?

I have a 2004 f150 lariat crew 4x4 5.4 3 valve motor 56,000 miles. I was driving the truck all morning in heavy snow covered roads northern ohio. I backed the truck into the garage and turned on a torpedo heater to melt the snow and ice off of the truck. I shut the heater off once it warmed up and melted the majority of the Ice and snow off. Let it sit for a few hours went to start and it just cranked. After turning the key off and waiting a few seconds i then tried starting the engine again. It started but not for that soon died after like it was starving for fuel. I started again and tried to give it gas but is just died. I think it is fuel related if anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
brian

I tried starting the motor again my gryphon said 60 to 70 psi in actual fuel rail pressure. Once i started the motor it dropped to 13 and then steadily fell to 0. I waited until pressure was regained and tried to start again this time it is running but fluctuating pressure between 60 and 14 psi with no pattern.

the filter probably caused the pump to overheat. pull the filter off and see what kind of crap comes out. poor in onto like a sheet of paper or something so you can get a real good look at whats in it.

Yeah, if the filter is filthy with dirt and rust, it needs to be changed , and the fuel tank needs to be replaced if there is rust present in the filter.

I replaced the fuel filter with a new one there was a bit of sediment that came out of the filter. The fuel that came out was murky yellow. The truck ran great but then began to putter a bit for no reason. Then it started to work good once again. the only thing that I could think of would be bad gas or fuel pump is starting to go or a loose connection. Any more ideas?

Man, why do these trucks have fuel filter problems. I have had the same filter in my car for 10 years and 160k miles and never had a problem. Does Ford put rusted metal in their fuel tanks? Gas at most pumps today is filter and very clean...

I have pictures that I took, I will post them when I get home from school. I have been looking around on the forum and I see that alot of people have had problems with the fuel pump control module. Tonight I will drop the spare and see what it looks like under there.

If you park in a heated shop or garage regularly the chances are that you have condensation in your tank. That causes the rust, murky fuel and fuel system failures. I would suggest gas line antifreeze regularly and when ever possible park with a full tank of fuel.

Problem fixed, The fuel pump driver module was corroded through from salt and was malfunctioning. Bought a new one and runs great. Took pictures and will be posting soon. I want to thank everyone on the forum and say that it is the most valuable place to look when the truck starts acting funny. Chances are some one has been there before.
Thanks again,
Brian

I am having a similar issue in my wife's 2001 5.4 Expy. Is the fuel pump driver module inside the tank? Can you send/post your pics?

Thank you in advance,
