Need engine info help! Mustang guy!
 

Ok I am looking to a 5.4l swap into my mustang, and was looking for a f150 transplant engine online, and do not know where to start:

I heard there were a few years/models that used a forged crank besides the lightning. Does anyone have this info, I have tried to search online, and have had no luck!

the easiest way to tell for sure would be to drop the oil pan and check. on a 4WD model this is more difficult b/c the front differential assembly is in the way. nonetheless, it is the only way to know for sure. the earlier engines (97-01?) generally had the forged, whereas the later ones generally got the cast. (02-03) however, there have been exceptions to the later engines, some have had the forged as well. however, the 03 is the best engine combo due to the increased threads on the spark plug heads, as well as b/c the block is a little heavier/denser, and can hold more power. i would look for an 03 engine, drop the oil pan, and check to be sure. the link provided links to another thread that shows a pic of each, cast and forged for comparison. Also, not all Lightning engines received the forged crank, despite advertising... A few guys cracked open their engines, and were VERY unhappy to find that they had the cast crank. Like I said, there is only one way to know for certain...

ok so what i am hearing is a 03 or later engine, with a crank from 97-00

I am going junkyard shopping, and need to figure out what to look for!

if you can find it like that... ask for pics of the crankshaft, and compare those to the ones in the link in the other thread that torkum posted. if not, at the worst, look at spending ~$350 on a forged ford 5.4L crankshaft.

Well if you passed over the heading. I have a factory Ford rebuild. It was in use about 1 year. It is perfect and has the steel crank. All casting numbers point it out to being a 2003, the tag says 3-2005. If you interested in it, send me an email. It's complete from intake to oil pan and balancer to flywheel.
