Hum From Engine Compartment

1994 F150 2WD Gasoline Engine, in great shape runs like new (photo attached). I am getting a medium pitched hum from the engine compartment. It is intermediate but I am now hearing it about 90 % of the time. I went to the dealer and they said that they thought it was the power steering pump however I hear the hum whether or not I am turning the wheel. They said the pump was fine but they could replace it and the sound may disrepair. I elected not to replace the power steering pump until I had a more definitive answer. It disrepairs after I go above 20 MPH, I am not sure if this is due to road noise or the hum just disappears. I think it just disappears above 20 MPH. Anytime I am less than 20 MPH (just started, stopping at red light, etc.) I can hear the hum. Can anyone help me?

Sorry , never heard the term. Usually a Power Steering noise has it own distinct octave level / more of a whine IMO , could be considered a hum but if you ever heard a noisy Power steering pump, you may know what I mean.

I would check the PCV valve first . Make absolutely sure your running a Motorcraft valve . Reason - Other after market valves have VERY tight margins compared to the OEM valve that Ford recommends for your motor. Fram is the worst valve I've ever seen. Some make noise when new. The engine can't breath because the valve gap is to small. A malfunctioning PCV system will eventually damage an engine. So check that out.

Check all your rubber hoses - Specially where the PCV system enters the intake. If you have an IAC valve on that motor, you might want to take a look at that. There's a forum on this site that is specifically for your model here - https://www.f150online.com/forums/pre-1997-models-51/ You may want to post your question there as well.

Welcome to F150online - Nice lookin truck!!

Good luck

I am using Michelin Light Truck Tires. The noise is present whether on not I am moving. The dealer said it could possibly be a bearing in the power steering pump but was not 100% sure.

I really don’t how to describe except as a hum. It sounds just like a hum as if you were humming with your mouth closed. It is not the “normal” whine power steering sound.

I meant disappears. I probably spelled it wrong and hit the first thing that came up in spell check.

I will check the PCV valve but it was replaces over a year ago, I believe a Motorcraft valve was used. The hum started about 3 months ago. I will post in the pre-1997 model forum.

Thanks for the help.
