Ive been reading up on the windsor and romeo engines and found that in 1999 ford changed the cylinder head design on the mustang to allow for more air intake. Did that carry over to F150's as well? And if they did can I use a 1999+ windsor 4.6l cylinder head on my 1997 4.6l windsor? I have not found anything that says that i cannot do this.

In 1999 Ford released a new Power improved head, Pi head. It was first used on the 1999 5.4 F-150 and in 2001 it was used on the 4.6 f-150. Using the Pi head requires a Pi intake or an adapter.

There are adapters for PI intakes on non-PI heads, but I've never seen one for the reverse, so you need (and would want anyway, much better) a PI intake if you use the heads. The main problem with the swap is that the PI heads have much smaller chambers than non-PI and a direct swap raises compression on a 4.6 from 9:1 to something like 10.8:1, can't remember the exact number but way too high for a street motor.

So with a lower compression piston change and all the right adapters and intakes the PI heads should work on mine then

If you run PI heads, run a PI intake. The non-PI would kill most of the potential gains. If your shortblock is healthy it would be pretty expensive to change pistons just to swap heads, I would rather have the non-PI ported and use a PI intake. If your motor isn't healthy, it would be a helluva lot easier to just pick up a good PI motor from a boneyard and have the swap done in a day....

Thats a real good point, i didn't think about that it would be very expensive to do all that.
