Engine Squealing
 

Has anyone had any squealing come from there truck when it is first started and during driving i thought it was a belt that got wet after water got splashed up in there and some dirty water but i power washed that area and pulleys and put soap on the belt and the belt stuff to keep it from squealing. I messed with the fan clutch and wiggled fan bladed but it didn't seem loose so im not sure what the sound is. It squeals during start up and during driving when i push down on the gas mostly and my truck is doing a high rev at start up which is a lil bit unusual too my truck is a 99 150 with a 5.4l in it. any advise or suggestions would be appreciated.

Take a look at the tensioner.I beleive there are marks that indicate weather the belt is stretched out.You need to pinpoint where it is coming from.It could be anything idler pulley,alternator,ps pump,bad tensioner,AC etc......

My 97 F150 had the same symptoms as yours and it was the harmonic balancer, I started it one day to actually take it to the dealer (!) and the harmonic balancer came right apart! Luckily it didn't spin of at high engine RPMs, just idle speed so it spun off and dropped on the ground luckily. $150 for repair.

Take your serp belt off and run the engine to make sure the sound is not there. If the sound is gone after removing the belt, turn the engine off and try to move and spin all the pulleys to determine were the problem is.

Torkum hit the nail on the head. Run it with the belt off to eliminate the engine driven accessories. I had a similar problem with my family truckster (2000 Windstar) and spent 200 on parts before finally getting smart enough to run it with the belt off. Turned out to be the camshaft position sensor shaft. I pulled off the sensor, squirted a little light wieght oil in there and the sound disappeared. At least long enough to trade it for my 150!

I was playing with the belt while my truck was off and noticed when i kept pulling the belt the tensioner kept squeaking just with me pulling the belt so I am sure I found the culprit. I will run it without the belt today though.While I have the belt off im gonna change the fan clutch belt and tensioner since i got 108,000 now so thatway hopefully i wont have to go back in there for another 108,000 miles.Thanks for everyones help and suggestions.

Change the belt its a simple fix..:thumbsup:
