I'm sure you could get it in there, not sure it would run.............. if it did, it surely would fail emmisions.
You'd prolly have to rig up a wiring harness somehow, not sure how the tranny would fit......

You could, but it would be a massive DOWNgrade. If you're gonna swap something in there, put in a 3V 5.4L.

Really? The 4.2 must be better than I thought.

With a carb it wouldn't take much to get it to run, it would take alot to get everything else in the truck to work though.

The easiest way to get a V-8 in there would be to find a wrecked truck like yours for a doner that has everything you need and put in either the 4.6 or 5.4, it would be simpler than rewiring the whole truck to use different gauges and getting all the lights to work again. The more your doner is like your current truck (options, tranny, bed/cab config...) the easier it will be.

Not necessarily, but EFI is that much better than any carb.

The gauges are NOT part of the engine management systems, on any Ford. On some recent models, the temperature gauge shares its sensor with the PCM, but they can be separated easily, and nothing else is shared.

So what runs the speedo then? I thought it was the VSS, and if you can change your gear and tire settings in the computer to keep the speedometer correct... I know mine on my 2002 sure doesn't act like its on a cable like my old Ranger's does.

On your 97, there are very few inputs from the engine system.
The oil pressure switch, that you can install on the 351 to do the same function.
Two PCM links from the PCM to the dash. One is the diagnostic port, one to the dash. What signal is lost to the dash may not be important but expect to lose something.
The speedo should still work because it's driven from a VSS not the PCM like later trucks..
What you need is engine mounts, cooling, wire the starter, exhaust, shifter, drive shaft issues and solve small issues as they come up.
The trans should be built with better clutches and bands and shift improver kit from B-M if it will see anything more than passenger car type use in a truck.
An RV type camshaft and 4 barrrel carb will make this engine pull pretty hard with 3.55 gears.
I would call it a nice swap if your not dealing with emmissions or any other outside issues and have the capability to do it.
Done a lot more than this in my shop over the years.

You're right. I forgot about the VSS. It's really for transmission management, and since it's ON the trans, and he's swapping that, too, he'd need to put his current VSS into the speedo cable port on the older trans. Its signal is shared by the speedo, and also by engine management, but its function there is VERY minor. It's only used for IAC modulation during deceleration.
