I'm still fairly new to the site, and I guess this is the first time I've seen gunk in the cam sensor. Can you shed some light here? I have a 97 5.4.

Not trying to be insultive but you do get 100,000 miles out of your tires, -not?
THE motor is wore out!
Is admiral you have that many miles but be reasonable.
The knock could be a piston slap, a bearing, cam drive related.
Get the diesel and be happy again.
This is what I would tell you face to face and not just from behind a key board.
