4.6 pinging (detonation)
My '98 is having problems pinging with any fuel under premium. Should I replace the knock sensor and see if that fixes it or is there another cure anyone may offer. It runs pretty well, but lacks the ooomph I desire sometimes. Any suggestions?

You need to start with looking at any codes stored.
Pinging can be cause by a leaking EGR, carbon in the cylinders, poor fuel quality, blocked cats, mass air meter contamination, false requests to open the EGR., air leaks. Have to find a place to start the search. |
How many miles has it been since you changed the plugs?

Have to find a place to start the search. I have replaced the EGR valve, DPFE sensor, and Mass Air Flow sensor. Is a blocked cat fairly common? I got the check engine light to go off, but it then came on again and the pinging never stopped. The Ford dealer said that it is carbon built up on the intake. Also, I always buy good gas (name brand, not discount?). I don't know. |
Did you clean the TB? I'm sure it needs done if no one ever has. |
Intake cleaning
No, I have not cleaned the intake. I will do that this weekend.
