Jerking when going up hill
This last weekend we was driving down through WV. and while climbing some hills I notice the truck bucking or Jerking some as I pulled the hills. It started doing the same thing on flat land, now this is not all the time. i changed the fuel filter thinking it was the problem but it is still doing it,not as bad.I am asking would it be a fuel pump going bad or maybe a coil? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is the check engine light on? Sounds like a misfire. Use the search tool and type in Misfire.

I agree, its probably a misfire. My 02 was doing the same thing. I replaced the plugs and all 8 coils and is just fine now, and I also have no more pinging running 87 octaine fuel like I did before. The truck runs smooth like new. I know the coils are expensive, but I got all 8 shipped for about 90.00 on ebay. The result was well worth the money and 2-3 hours it took me to do the job.

The service engine light does not come on, It did a couple weeks ago and found #6 coil to be bad. can you check these even if the light doesn't come on.

Elcamino, are you saying that you got all 8 coils for $90.00 cause I paid $46.00 for one coil. And if so was it a discount store?

Pumper, how many miles do you have on the plugs/COPs? Check e-bay there are usually some good deals on COP's there

It's also worth replacing your PCV valve while you're at it, it can sometimes cause behaviour that mimics a misfire, however sounds like you have a real one...if nobody's mentioned it, it seems to be better to replace all the coils/COPs at once.

Do the Rev's change at all? If that does not happen it is most definately a miss-fire I had one on my 01 (#7 Cylinder), and once I brought it in they ran a check (I had just bought the truck so I didn't have an Edge yet) and the dealsership paid for it ($200) for parts I am not sure to just fix the miss-fire. Anyway bring it in anyway even though the CEL isn't on.

mine did that only in overdrive only around 40 mph. if you would give it more gas it would kick out of overdrive and it would stop. i changed the fuel filter and it fixed it

You can try to kick your monitor into gear.
Misfire Monitor Repair Verification Drive Cycle: The Misfire Monitor can only be tested if the fuel gauge reads above one quarter full or the FLI PID is above 15% (percentage fuel tank fill). Start the engine and drive the vehicle to a location where speeds can reach 88 to 97 km/h (55 to 60 mph) and coast down to 64 km/h (40 mph) without traffic interference. Accelerate at wide-open throttle to allow vehicle to shift at red-line (if equipped with a tachometer). Immediately return to normal speed limits. Perform the following drive procedure three consecutive times. Accelerate on highway to 97 km/h (60 mph). Maintain speed for 30 seconds. Coast down with foot off the accelerator pedal from 97 km/h to 64 km/h (60 mph to 40 mph). |
I changed the plugs 3 weeks ago when #6 coil went bad, I have 96000 mi on the truck.I talked a mechanic yesterday and he told me that since I have that many miles it is due for new coils that they will start breaking down, he said if I did not want to spend the money for all the coils at once I could buy 3 more since I had already replaced 1 and start the process of elimation. Then finish buying the other ones when I got the cash. You guys are right they are not cheap. Through Ford they are $75 ea. at carquest they are $46 so I think that is the route I will go. I will also change the pcv. Thanks Guys.

Most here buy there coils form kevin - Global Atomotive an ebay store - He sells 8 new COPs for $96 as a f150 package..
He use to sell a Package deal including Motorcraft plugs for about $130. |
jbrew, your saying that I can get all 8 for $96? if so do you have web site or something that I can get ahold of this place. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the price. If that is so I just paid $46 for 1. You know these trucks are not like the old ones with plug wires and all that, I'm learning as time goes by. I do appreciate all the help and money saved.

The coils themselves are usually not the problem. Usually, just the COP boot and spring are all that are needed.
They're only 5 bucks each at AutoZone. Add in a really large tube of dielectric grease and use the grease generously. Steve |
Steves right , check out the boot and use plenty of dielectri grease - If you don't , just look at the insides of a dry boot , you'll see carbon trails - Spark goes nuts inside the boots if there dry..
Freakin Global Automotive is cloesd down until March 5th - Sucks , but it's worth the wait - I have a Blue 01 screw in the shop right now that's been running Global COP's for almost a year without an issue.
