Clatter on cold start - happened twice
 

This happened twice.....

Cold, about 10F-15F, the vehicle had sat unused for about 5 to 7 days. Fired right up but made a loud clattering sound that lasted for about 3-5 seconds, although it seemed much longer than that. Truck runs fine. What is it? Not sure if there is anything to worry about or not.

All fluids are normal.

2006 F150 with V6, about 3500 miles.

what oil are you running??-10 degrees the thicker the oil the longer it takes to circulate around the motor.

It is lack of oil in the top end at start up. If you are not using an Motorcraft FL-820S, you might want to change back to it. It has a silicon anti-drain back valve that is stronger than most. No guarantee with a 5-7 day sit for the vehicle, but may help. Definitely change if you are currently using Frams.

Do the V6's use the anti-drainback valves also? I'm thinking it might just be a combination of the cold and the truck sitting for days. What oil do you have in it? 5W-30?

I thought they all were to use the -S filters now. My 04 manual lists only for the 4.6 and 5.4, and they both use -S filters. As far as oil, it should be the 5w-20. Haven't had any trouble with it or the 820S, although normally I use it every day, but on occasion it wil be a couple of days where I don't use it and have had no problems.

ive run 10/30 castol in every vehicle ive ever owned. im up in here in massachusetts we get some cold nites. i know some arent big on fram filters. ive never had a problem with them though.

I have actually noticed a difference using the motorcraft filters over the Fram. Noticably quieter when starting, even on those cold Canadian mornings. I don't know what filters the V6's use but if it the same as the mods then I guess the drainback valve is on there.

Actually, I am using the recommended Motorcraft filter and oil. The weight is 5-20 as per the owners manual.

No noises noted, even when cold, if used daily or every other day. So maybe it is drain back and the loss of oil to the hydraulic lifters that is the source of the noise.

the 4.6 is a overhead cam engine so the oil has to travel way up to top to get everything. so a quality filter is essential. i belive 4.2 is a regular overhead valve setup?

Yeppers, I'm thinking then maybe it was just from sitting?
