300 Straight Six questions...

... I'm looking at buying a F150 with the 300 I6, anyone have any experience with this motor? A friend of mine used to have one and I really liked it, it seemed to have awesome pulling power and was bulletproof reliable. Just wanted to get some opinions from some other owners. How about gas milage? Also, what do you think is a fair price for a F150 XL or Custom with this engine? Thanks a lot.

Gas mileage on them sucks, but they will tow down your house and run forever if properly maintained. And the pricing depends on the condition of the truck and the mileage. I'd say $4,000 would be very reasonable for an XLT short bed reg cab 4x4 with under 100K in good condition.

The one I had in a '78 F150 ran strong for 248k miles untill she started breaking wrist pins (must have bent the crank with all that torque). When was the last year of the I-6? '88 or '89? The truck your looking at must be 15+ years old.

'96 was the last year.

What year is the truck in question?

I had a 1989 F-150 4X4 Super cab with 300-6. That moter is a 4.9L workhorse! Best truck I ever owned! Drove it 14years, 268,000 miles. Pulled a boat with it weekly ever spring, summer,& fall. Easy to work under the hood on. Good Luck, Ed

The Ford 300 I-6 is one of the greatest truck engines of all time.

It will not get good mileage (maybe 15-16 mpg with a 5 speed, 2wd supercab, regular bed). But it should be cheap to operate due to low maintenance and insurance costs and excellent reliability.

The motor makes excellent torque, but only over a fairly narrow rpm range. It will not rev out high, which means it is pretty slow if you are trying to race your buddy's truck.

It's fast enough, even with the OBSCENE weight & drag of my Bronco. ;)

I had 2 of them I brought from brand new, to approx 150K on each of them. I loved them and wish they were still available. Never had an ounce of trouble out of either of them.

15-16 mpg is great when you're current daily driver is a 408 stroker Silverado with 4.10's and a 4000 torque converter, it's lucky to hit 10 mpg!

I thought about getting a 4.3L Chevy but then I remebered I hate those motors and a used 4L60e GM automatic is iffy, plus I've already got a Chevy and want something different, so it sounds like the F150 with the 300 is the way to go as it's reliable and affordable!

oh.. need to mention, the only thing you possibly need to look for is the radiator. The old I-6's seemed to run a little hot as they got older when they were loaded up in the summer with the AC on at a stop light, etc.

300 i-6

had a 1995 2x4 with the straight 6 and I thought it was the best motor out there. sold it for 4 thousand with 76 thousand on it and the people that bought it have over 100 thousand on it and all that has been replaced is a water pump. Fuel mileage is horrible my 98 4.6 4x4 supercab gets better mileage! I would def recomend it, I think they should still be in production because that was the only 6 cylinder that could haul around a truck, these new v6's cant even get out of their own shadows.
