Turning on 4x4

You can switch from 2WD to 4WD High or vise-versa at will, moving or not, as long as you do not the exceed max speed warning on the drivers side sun visor. I'm certain this warning is also stated in the vehicle's manual. I can't remember the max speed you can switch at, but like I said, it is on the sun visor or in the manual. Why there is a max speed, or what the consequences of switching above that speed are I have no idea. I personally would not recommend not heeding the warning.

Concerning 4WD Low. You can not switch to Low Range without coming to a complete stop first. You also need to come to a complete stop when switching out of Low Range. This is because of the changing of the gear ratios going from High Range to Low Range. You probably need to shift in to neutral or park before switching in or out of 4WD Low. I don't remember for certain, but I always put my truck in neutral when going to or coming out of Low Range.

Hope this helps,
Mike

For 4low, you also need to be in neutral with your foot on the brake.

If you did not get an owners manual, you can download one for free at www.motorcraftservice.com in the owners section. It will be in PDF format.

I believe the manual advises that 4hi be engaged under 55 mph.

thanks. i tried this today and it goes into 4hi piece of cake, but stopped with the truck in park the 4lo light wouldnt come up on the dash when i turned the knob to 4lo. is there a trick to it?

racerf150-2 12-01-2006 11:16 PM

You MUST be in neutral WITH your foot on the brake for 4 LO.

correct

N8s93turbo 12-02-2006 04:07 PM

cool, it works

sean_somer 12-03-2006 12:14 AM

the 4hi speed is 56 & its under 3mph with your foot on the brake in N for 4lo (actually kinda easier to be rollin *under 3mph* when you put it in 4lo, helps the transfer case change gears, just make sure youre barely rolling):fyi:
