87 pick up won't start

She died on me early this morning as I was going up a hill. I thought it was out of gas so I put more in No go. Tried to jump start no luck. Put in a new battery, better but still wont turn over. Is this a starter or alternator problem ?
Thanks Brian

There is not much information here to go on 87.
Are your battery cables and terminals clean and in good shape?
Is the new battery well charged?
Turn on the headllights. Do they look bright? Turn em back off.
Do your dash lights come on when you turn the key on ?
When you turn the key to "crank" do you hear the click of the starter relay?
Is the starter motor turning the engine over at a normal speed?
Can you hear your fuel pump running?
Give us something to work with.

More detail for the pro's

OK more detail
Battery is fully charged all electrical works as well
I can hear the starter relay
The starter motor is turning the engine over at a normal speed What do I listen for to hear if the fuel pump is running ?
I hit the starter a few times and
I put new plugs in but still no love

Thank you to all those who can help me
Cheers, Brian

Could be the starter, or ignition relay, well no you said it cranks but wont start, so my guess is the starter

Turn the key to the ON position and listen for the fuel pump to prime. It should sound like a whine for a couple of seconds.

If the starter motor is turning the engine over normally then i would doubt the starter is your problem.

I don't understand , why you beating on your starter if it's turnng your motor over.
I had an 86 crank but no start - it was the Pickup Coil within the distributer. Something to check out.

Good Luck

Are you getting spark? If so, spray it with some ether and see if it fires up.
If no spark, figure out why.
