Is a 94' F-150 with 180K Miles Straight 6 LongBed ExCab for $2000.00 a Good Deal?
 

I am going to check out a 1994 Ford F150 "Long bed , extra cab Automatic 300 straight 6 cylinder 4.9 ltr , 180,000 miles , runs great , work truck .tow package , added leaf springs , wide tires , rebuilt tran.& rear dif. new radiator and hoses , new air cooler , new plugs & wires , new starter , new water pump & thermostat , duel gas tanks . A/C runs COLD mirror tint , includes topper."

He is asking $2000.00 FIRM Said he bought it back in 95 and drove to cali and back a couple times for work said its a REAL nice truck ( doesnt everyone say that ) So I guess what im asking is.. is this a decent deal? also im going to look at it this evening.. what should i look for? what should i listen for? etc.. I am new to the truck world ( I have a 2000 Honda Civic Si LOL i know a roller skate ) so im just looking for some pointers, I am looking to buy this truck to just haul stuff and move stuff around this will be a 2nd automobile and not driving very often.

This sounds like a hell of a deal, those Ford I-6 motors run forever, my buddies dad put well over 300K on one with good, regular maintenance and a couple not so minor repairs (rear end, new head and intake) however the bottom end of this motor held up beautifully and those repairs were both past the 200K mile mark. Look for the normal stuff, maintenance records, raw fuel smell at start up/take off, hard starting, smoothness of shifts, burnt trans fluid; I know the early E4OD trannies were notorious for blowing up around 100 to 120K miles, but I think this problem was ironed out before the '94 MY. IMHO those are the best looking Ford trucks (besides of course a '56 F-100) My uncle has an F250 from that era with the 460 and it has over 250K on it and still runs ****..... I think his is a '95 :beers:

I would give the thing a serious going over. If it pukes the motor it's value goes from $2,000 to $200. Something to consider is you might be better off buying an older non-computer controlled non-injected vehicle as they can be easier to work on. Of course this is assuming you would do the work yourself. It is very hard to find a nice truck under $3,000 so look at as many as possible. Beware as there is a ton of garbage out there just waiting to suck up your money in repairs. So spend some time comparing. Good Luck!

I had an 88 with the 300 I-6, but mine had a 5-speed. When I sold it, that tuff SOB had 165K on it. three more people had owned it the last time I saw it and it was still running strong at 250K...........If it had ben an X-cab, I would still have it!

That engine, IMHO, was the best one ever put in a ford pick-up truck. Even in the computerized, fuel injected form, the 300 is not that bad to work on....that is if you ever actually do have a problem. The only thing I had go bad on mine were the coil and the driver's side motor mounts (but the mount going bad, several times, had a lot to do with low range 4WD and GOBS of torque).

hmm I am wondering if I should offer 1500.00 straight up or is that low balling? it needs new tires.. or is 2000.00 just too good of a deal to pass up?

Yup drove it yesturday and it seems to run good, i took it up to 30 MPH then floored it, it downshifted smooth and ran decent, no crazy noises out of the engine. Checked under the hood no oil dripping.. but there was grime on the top part of the engine.. but im sure thats just build up over time.. hmmm decisions ...

I am going to be selling my 1994 ford F-150 next year. It,s a reg cab 8' box. 4.9 six, 5 speed. With 151.000 on it. Here in Texas, You can't buy a truck like mine for less than $3000.00

2K is a fair price if the tranny was rebuilt. That can be what an E4OD costs in itself.

The 300 will get you home. Trust me, these old school iron trucks are 10 times tougher than these plastic panzy trucks of today.

And if this is a 4x4, 2K is a steal.

Man, if you saw the pure torture I put both my older I-6's through, you'd shake your head. Only ever saw one 300 break, when I was done with it, I pulled an 8 inch long piece of camshaft through the tear in the oil pan caused by a broken piston, after running the thing 8 miles at highway speed like that. 8 MILES, no oil, hammer down ! Would I buy one as a second vehicle, yup, anytime.

My last 300 had 270,000 miles on it and ran perfect. If it wasn't rusted out so bad I might still be driving it.

Try to get it for $1750, quoting the tires it needs, and giv'er !

I had a '94 that had 375,000 on the engine and a rebuilt transmission. It leaked a little oil but ran great. If I hadn't been T boned I'd still be driving it. I paid about $3000 for it, the book was around $6000.

Isn't that the same motor UPS has in all their old school delivery trucks? I heard UPs used a Ford V6 that was good for a ton of miles.

My father-in-law has the old 300 I-6. That is all he will buy. Its in a 85 auto 4X4. 200k+ on it too! All that motor knows how to do is run! He just changes the oil. Once in a while I may catch him doing some routine maintenance but that is about it. He has had a few up to the 200k mark - he only gets rid of them with the body rusts off the frame.

He once drug my brother-in-law's F350 loaded with a flat trailer with a car on it up out of a ditch and up a hill when bro-in-law slid off the road.
