Pulling Codes

I feel stupid, but I have seen on the forums that everybody has been able to scan through or pull codes from their truck for misfires, etc. Do you have to have a tuner to do this, or is there a way through the diagnostics on our trucks that you can scan through them some other way like on the odometer? My truck is a 2000 5.4.

You will need an OBD-II reader, scanner or something with equivilent capabilites.

Many tuners have this as a bonus.

Basic readers start at around $30 on ebay, or $65-100 at WalMart, or $125 and up at most auto parts stores.

Many chain stores will read your codes for free in most locations except California and Canada.

Well, list the other 47 states that aren't California while you're at it...

If you are good with HEX to Decimal conversion ( or know how to do it with Windows Calculator ) you can get most ( all ?? ) from the DTM on the HEC, with your MY truck ( digital odometer ).

This is a read only, where the code readers like AutoTap, Actron, etc allow for single code erase on most models.

The cheap ones are read only, but will fit the bill if you are only looking for a read function, and would do a repair and then disco the battery to erase them, then go on the drive cycle.

DTM for the HEC :
