What oil should I use?

I have a 2005 f150 Lariat with the 5.4 Triton and its due for an oil change soon and I was wondering what's the best oil I should use? I've heard Motorcraft or Mobil1 are good choices but I don't know what type of oil like 5w-30 or another type?

Use the 5w-20 oil Ford recommends. I would use Motor craft oil and a motorcraft filter and I personally would change it at no more then 5000 miles. Thats a 3v and oil is critical in it. The timing chain tensioners are known to plug up..

Ok thanks guys. I usually change my oil every 3,000 miles but you're saying I can go up to 5,000 with the Motorcraft?

Just curious, considering all cars and trucks, what's the longest a car/truck can go between oil changes and what oil would that use?

You can't generalize. It depends on the oil, the filter, the engine, and the driving conditions.

take for example....Land Rover

the oil changes on some of their newer model vehicles are spec'd at 15,000 mile intervals during normal driving conditions .....they got together with castrol and developed an oil formula to last that long but at $17-$20 a quart though....

Thank you 88. And yea that is pricey for an oil change but if the average family car travels about 15,000 miles a year that's only one oil change at $100 (5 quarts) vs three oil changes at ~$40 for me (7 quarts)

In the past, that was a big selling point for synthetic oils - extended drain intervals. These days, that advantage has been just about eliminated - today's conventional oils are as good as yesterday's synthetics.

I would NOT advise you to extend the drain intervals on a 5.4 3 valve - the engine is picky enough on oil, you don't really want to take a chance on gumming up the VCT system.

Today's synthetics ain't synthetics! Except for Amsoil PAO, or Redline Ester, or maybe one or two more.

Except for Amsoil PAO
Gas Chromotography says yer wrong. Try a Gp III dino with a good splash of ultra high VI PAO.

Redline Ester
Nope, Redline at most is 10-12% polyol ester.

Use what you like, as long as it wears the API Starburst and has Ford approvals on the bottle, it's hard to find a better oil. Extended oil changes are for mostly commercial users where down time is money. In scenarios like that it can be a money saver. For the average driver, it's a novelty at best. Some engines respond well to extended changes, others do not. For the average Joe, you're still running contaminated, dirty oil over the long haul. Why? It's your dollar, your truck.
