Diesel Engine's Life?

Was looking at a 2000 F250 with the PS and 196k. They are rated for a rebuild at 250k? Issues? ETC? I have no issue with getting one with 100k if I found one within my range.

its not impossible to go 300k with the right maintanence

keep the filters clean and change the oil every 3000-4000
fuel filter with every other oil change
air filter as needed

...zap!

I have to agree with zapster, I'd be a little nervous pulling the trigger on one with 196K unless it looked clean and had some good documentation on maintenance.

hmm 196k is definatly getting up there. Just how good of a deal is this, these engines are pretty expensive to work on. I would feel comfortable more in the 100-130k but thats just me.

A five-year old truck with almost 200K...I would steer clear. What are you looking to spend? My 2002 was traded in for $25K with 60K....probably sold for 27-28K...had lots of goodies installed! Boy was I a DUMBAZZ for getting rid of that truck!

Documented proof of maintenance, overall condition, price. In that order. As a former PS owner and sales rep it's all about how the truck was used and taken care of, I sold my personal truck to a buyer who looked at over 60 trucks (!) and he said mine was several thousand $ more but the "proof of Maint." and condition were the selling points. The other day I saw a newer Super Duty by my home, what a POS! my thought was "hhmm, 40 grand 2 years ago, I wouldn't pay 7 grand for it today" Even with good maint. I'd think twice with close to 200k on the clock, (unless the price is reeeaaly good, like mid teens) remember the entire truck has that many miles not just the engine.

That's it?!? Boy, things have changed. We used to have a '79 Mercedes 300SD (3.0l I5 turbodiesel) that was supposed to go 500k miles between overhauls/rebuilds...

It was low teens as in 12,xxx. I still passed.

I had an '85 6.9 in a crew cab go over 300k without rebuild

it got pretty horrid gas mileage up over 250k though, but those engines ran forever as long as you knew how to fix them (chronic water separator issues, funky glow plug electrical system, etc.)

I dont have any experiences with the new diesels though
