Computer reset won't work...
Ok, I've replaced some things in my '98 4.2 F-150 and wanted to reset the computer. I was told I will get a full swing on the gauges the first time I start it after the reset. Well I've disconnected the battery and turned on the lights for a few minutes but when I hook her back up and fire it up I get no gauge swing. WTF am I doing wrong??? How else can I confirm a reset?????
i prob dont know what im talking about but my idea of "resetting" the computer is not disconnecting the battery, but i would hook an ODB code reader to the computer system inside the vehicle under the steering wheel and have the reader reset the system, just dont ask me how or why, im just trying to help, i know you have to do this after you install something the computer doesnt recognize or to turn off the check engine light after you fix the repair it was complaining about
Well, I did the intake gasket repair and changed my plugs cause the #4 cyl. was getting wet so I figured I better reset everything since #4 isn't fouling out anymore due to moisture. I'm just confused cause everybody on here talks about the gauge swing they get when they disconnect the battery. I just can't make it happen.
First I've heard about the "gauge swing"...... Mine has never done it. You have to leave the battery disconnected for about 15 minutes I think (at least that's how long I leave it).....
Once you start the truck again, don't touch the gas pedal either... You have to let the computer get the idle set properly. Only takes a minute or so. You should also have to reset your radio presets and the the clock too.

Could be a 2000+ with digital odometer thing. Everytime I disconnect the battery, on first startup all my gages swing around. I can do the same with the diagnostics mode. So most likely if you have an old style mechanical cluster the gages will not swing.
