which oil to use when????
 

hello once again,

Well i have few basic questions. I live in Midwest and winters are real bad, and summers are hot. I have a question what type of oil should i be using during winter/summner. This one mechanic is telling me that triton is a very excellent engine, but you must use a correct oild to keep it running long time. He is telling me to use a 5W-30 or 5W-40. He said never use 10W-30. Is this true? What does everyone use during winter and during summer? He also told me this is due to the fact that triton has a very small holes where the oil goes by and thats why its critical to use a 5w-30 oil. I would apreciate some help. Thanks in advance.

5w20 or 5w30 for most oils, or Mobil1 0w20.

There's a ton of info on this subject if you use the search, but in a nutshell, the modular V8's are tight tolerance motors that require thin oil to lubricate, and remove heat from the motor. I personally use either Amsoil 5W-20 or Mobil 1 0W-20 year round. IMHO, if Ford decided a specific viscosity oil (previously unavailable) was needed to ensure longevity of the mod motors, who the he11 am I to question their team of engineers? Just my 2 cents.

Dear neso The nice thing about SYNTHETIC motor oil is its perfect for any weather conditions from a cold winter to a very hot summer. Synthetic oil always stays the same thickness from 400 degrees to -60 degrees below. Your truck requires a 5W20, Mobil 1 and Amsoil make either a 0W30. or a 5W20.

Waterloo is not THAT bad man! You do want to make sure you use a 5W or 0W oil in the winter for sure. This is where you need to have good oil flow on cold starts. That is when you get most of the wear on your motor. Personally, I use 5W-20 all year around with great results. I tow a trailer with it in the summer too.

5W-30 all year round in both my 5.4L and I live up in Canada where believe it or not, it gets cold up here! :lol:

I'm use full synthetic 10w30 right now, it has a colder pour point than a conventional 5w30.

I think these engines are very easy on oil, use a quality product between 0w20 to 10w30 and you will be fine.

Of coarse I'm partial to synthetics.

Use what Ford recommends on your label under the hood, probably 5W30. The mechanics from the dealership told me that the lifter followers will go out if you use heavier oils. Synthetics are great, but I wouldn't extend the oil change interval much at first. Synthetics will basically clean up a dirty engine, so you may end up with oil seeps, drips, and leaks, especially if it is high mileage.
