Help on OBD II Code
#4
josh,
Bill is correct on the sensor. Of coarse that's the hardest of the two to get to. $ 50 to $ 60 bucks at an auto parts store. Going thru the wheel well with the an open end wrench usally works, may help to unbolt the trans dip stick tube and move it out of the way. Don't forget the antisieze goop for the threads on replacement sensor!
Racer type guys replace the upstream sensors every 30,000 mile or less, as they do degrade performance. They set engine tune in real time whenever the engine is running.
Don't mess with the down stream sensors (after the cats) there only purpose in life is to monitor the operation of the cats and set a code in the pcm for people like the epa inspectors. They don't effect tuning at all, and could be removed and jumpered with a resistor and your truck would never know the difference.
However the Feds would take your first born and lock you up for life if you mess with there monitoring devices. ha! ha!
Hope this helps!
Gene
PS. don't forget to unhook the ground cable on your battey for a few minutes to clear the code. Hell, it's a good idea to unhook your battery anytime you work on your vehicle anyway.
