Truck won't start
 

I'm hoping someone has run into this before some I don't have to take it to the stealership.

I have an '99 F150 2W, 4.6, Manual shift. About 3 months ago, it started doing something bizzarre where it would not start. Not all the time, just occassionaly. Lately I realized that it only happened when it is hot out. It never does it in the morning, at night, or when it's cool out, just when it's hot. The truck has power and all accessories work fine, but when you turn the key, you get nothing, no click, nothing. However, if you turn the key on, get under the truck, and jumper the poles on the starter solenoid, it fires right up. My thoughts originaly were that it was the clutch pedal sensor, but I can't see how that would be heat related.

Any thoughts?????

Check the cables going to the battery. They may be corroded. The next time it doesn't start test the Starter Motor Relay on the firewall. There are 3 terminals on the relay. Two large ones for the battery power and a third smaller one. With the key on the on position, tranny in neutral, run a + jumper from the battery to the small terminal. If it starts then the problem is between the ignition switch and this relay. If it doesn't then short the two large terminals with a screwdriver. If it starts then the relay is bad. If it still doesn't, then most likely the cable is corroded and needs to be changed.

I have a '92 F150 manual shift that wont start. I can hear the fuel pump but thats it no click no nothing. The starter is brand new. I Thought it was the clutch pedal sensor but when I saw what you replied back to some one else with the same problem I tried what you advised him to do and it starts both ways when I jump the battery to the small terminal and when I short the 2 large terminals it starts. Do you know what the problem could be??
any help would be greatly appreciated

If it starts and runs after jumping the 2 outer terminals (large) then it's the silenoid. $18 and 5 mins to change. BORG is a good brand.

1. Disconnect the battery cable
2. Remove all cables from silenoid
3. Unbolt silenoid from firewall
4. Install new one in reverse
5. Turn key and start it up
