I'm pretty much done with Ford Trucks.
I haven't posted here much but have referred to this website often for help and information.
But I'm pretty much done with Ford trucks. I have a 1999 F-150. It had the oil leek at 18k miles. Took it in, they did the gasket change only. At 36k miles I took it back in and it was leaking even more and had to pay $500 to get the rebuilt engine and the extended warranty. Now I'm at 80k miles and the rebuilt engine is leaking from both headgaskets, the timing cover and the oil pan. It's been in the shop for 1 month. They called me and said that they had been approved to only reinstall gaskets. I told them that the engine is a rebuilt engine. And that the engine must be bad. Why would 4 gaskets fail at the same time? They had the inspector back out there and have reviewed it again and will only do the gaskets. They say that the engine is not pitted or warped or cracked. Are Ford's gaskets that bad??? Am I really getting the shaft??? Four years 2 rebuilds and 1 engine swap. 3 FAILED ENGINES IN FOUR YEARS PLUS ALL THE POSTS ON THIS WEBSITE ABOUT FAILED ENGINES! When I complained to the service rep I was told that there wasn't any engine maker in America whose engines don't leak. How many years has Ford been making engines? They haven't figured this out yet??? Supposedly I pick up the truck tomorrow with under 20k of warranty left on the extended warranty. I'm afraid they stuck a bandaid(gaskets) on the truck to get it to 100k and out of warranty. That plus having to redo the rotors every 5-8k miles is enough for me to realize. This is poor quality. It may look good on the outside but it's insides are low quality. Have you guys noticed the post about "how many of you have had no problems with your trucks?" There are more posts about the problems you've had then problem free trucks. Ford builds trucks like a rookie company. SO, I'm done. This POS is being sold. No more Ford's for me. There are better manufacturers out there. Good luck to you guys. But if you own a Ford you probably won't have much luck. |
Dont base your judgement on your one bad experience. There are plenty other guys out there with chevy, dodge, or whatever vehicle that have had the same problems as you. You just bought a lemon pretty much when u got yours. This happens and not that often. The 99's had trouble with the head gaskets in the 5.4's. Knock on wood i havnt had any trouble with my 4.6. Now, ford does make a quality vehicle...if it wasnt it wouldnt be the number one selling vehicle in america. The best thing is to sell your truck and maybe get a new one or even just a newer one and i garentee u will have great luck plus a powerful stylish truck. The guys that post on this website are the guys that are looking for answers. These posts would get boring if everybody bragged about how their vehicle never has anything go wrong and there would be nothing to talk about. My dads old 1991 f-150 4x4 was used and abused pulling a 20ft gooseneck trailer and it was pulled all 100,000 miles. It went over two times with over 10,000 miles on the oil change, and it was abused. It still runs today pulling a 16 foot cargo trailer for the construction business and we havnt had anything wrong with it yet. So dont let one bad vehicle change your mind about what you drive. Im a proud ford owner and i always will be.

That's a lemon by my standard. The big 3 all have many problems. I've owned many higher quality cars that were built in Japan.

All I'm gonna say... READ THE SIG.... When ANYTHING you buy gets to my mileage ... Call Me... and by then I'll have 500K....

Have fun with your Chebby

washout, it's not valid to compare problems with a new ford engines to a rebuilt engine. Factory engines are under Ford's control but who knows what's done to the rebuilt ones. Strange you had to get a rebuilt engine at just 36k miles---did you buy the truck new or was it possibly abused before you saw it? Two rebuilds and one engine swap in 80k miles are awful statistics. I'd trade for a new 04 f150. (not being a smart butt, but there's something wrong with the picture of 3 engines in 80k miles. Maybe your engine supplier, install shop or who knows what). I have 165,000 miles on my 4.6 97 and zero oil consumption between 3,000 mile changes. Still runs strong. So hang in there and reconsider.

I've had my 2000 since it was new, it now has 22,000 miles and it has never leaked a drop of oil, or anything else for that matter. (Edit: OOPS I forgot, got a rock stuck in the tread of the old Goodyears and darned if all the air didn't just leak right out of it)...Hubby: '68 Bronco 169,000+miles-runs great-leaks 0...Son #1 '95 F150 not sure of the mileage-runs great-leaks 0...Son #2 '93 Ranger 100,000+miles-runs great-leaks 0.
My family has owned Ford vehicles for as long as I can remember and yes, you do have issues now and again. Its the nature of the beast, when you have that many pieces that have to work together in perfect sync sometimes things go wrong. But understand, Ford does not, by any means, hold the corner on that market. I had a friend with a Chevy S10 pickup that went through 3 engines in as many years before he gave up and bought a Dodge. Basing your entire judgment of Ford vehicles on one lemon is rash. Whatever you decide to buy, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota...you could end up having the same type of problem, or worse. You are free to buy whatever you want but I would urge you to re-think Ford. It didn't get to be the best selling vehicle by selling millions of lemons!! I'm also a proud Ford owner and always will be! |
This forum is for trucks in 1 of 2 possible situations. 1: It needs fixing, 2: The owner wants it to be better than average. If you take the minimal number of forum members compared to the vast number of Ford owners, you would see the ratio of unsatisfied Ford owners to Satisfied owners is no contest. Ford is good stuff.

Call a lemon law attorney. And don't buy ford again. I made the same mistake. Ford trucks are not built to stand the test of time even with constant care. I am just as feed up as you are. I put over a thousand dollars in my engine last month due to ford not being able to find the problem under warranty. No reason to go into it. I'm with you, I will go back to imports after these two fords are sold.
Good Luck, PS. Ford makes it hard to be a loyal customer. |
Well, I am on my 5th Ford and have had problems with my Tempo (POS) and the transmission on my 2nd Explorer. 37" tires and a solid axle will do that.
I just sold my '94 GT and at 144k miles, it was faster than most vettes (yes, the engine was modified). The '99 F150 I just bought is as solid as they come. You can look at any manufacturer and find fault. Saab - had them, love them, but they are a pain in the butt. Same for BMW's. I've seen Honda's, Lexus', Infinity and so on make a bad car. When producing 10's of millions of cars per year, there is bound to be an issue. That being said, stay away from Dakotas and Durangos - they have had the most problems out there. Good luck with your next vehicle. J |
No problems on any of my 4 Fords. All went past 50K miles without needing engines or rotors or anything other than routine maintenance. You just got a bad one and a bad service guy as well.
|
Geeeeeesh, if you don't like Fords, then why do you come to this place? Adios.
