Are the Cheby's really that bad ? Man they are giving these things away

Ok I'll probably get hammered for this but here goes...whats the problems with the Chevys and GMC's ? I mean are the trannys junk ? Rears ? engines ? bodys ? I have never given them a second look but my neighbor just got 8k off sticker on a new Avalanche,he said the 4x4 trucks are 6k off with 0% finance, should I stay with Ford or maybe.......tell me the pros and cons,if there are either:lurk:

BADBLACK99 Feb 24, 2004 05:34 PM

Well for one gm vehicles are overpriced compared to their ford counterpart..second bad and declining sales of the avalanche have translated into huge savings for the customer...its gm's way of trrying to stay out of the red or barely drop into the red.

ranger,
When I purchased my F-150, I looked at Chevy's, too. To be quite honest, I could have bought one with leather and power seats for less than I got my XLT. If they had one with the leather seats/vinyl floors, who knows, I may have never visited this site.

From my experience with two Chevy service departments and two Ford service departments, Chevy wins hands down.

MROLDV8 Feb 24, 2004 06:34 PM

I know that GM is having some big problems with the new V8's in their trucks...piston slap...oil consumption...etc. I guess they were buying some back, even though they say that those problems are "normal". There is a class action being organized against them for crummy engines. Couple that with the usual squeeks and rattles that their trucks develop after a while, the fact that they aren't 'truck of the year' and try as they might, they can't outsell Ford...you can see why they're discounting them so heavily. Plus...even a lot of die-hard Chevy truck owners don't like the squinty-eyed front ends that's part of Chevy's 'look'.
Its no surprise that there are deep-cut discounts on the Avalanche. I know I sure wouldn't want to be seen driving one. They must only apeal to the aesthetically-impared.

JOHNnDENVER Feb 24, 2004 07:03 PM

Did you test drive them both? Ford and Chevy?

I did, and let me tell you, as far as the ride goes, there is truly no comparison. No matter what the discounts are, just truly compare truck to truck.

routhier Feb 24, 2004 07:16 PM

If I want to test drive a Chevy, I'll just go out to the driveway and hop in the wife's Tahoe. :D

I don't think GM's quality has anything to do with it. GM now has the most outdated model for sale with newer models now offered by Dodge, Ford and Nissan. With the enormous attention Ford has received with their new model coming out followed closely behind by the Nissan Titan, Chevy has done it's best to keep it's sales up by all of the incentives they are offering in an attempt to hold on to market share. Might I add, from what I have read, they have been pretty sucessful in doing so.

rangerr91 Feb 24, 2004 07:36 PM

JohnNDenver what are you saying ??

you said "teat drive,no comparrison" do you mean the Ford out rides the Cheby ? To me I really don't like the look of the 04 Fords they look too boxy to me but hey...:lurk:

I got $9600 off my 2003 F-150. I expect similar savings for a 2004 GM and Dodge models. Liek mentions, GM has the oldest truck on the market right now and the sales prices reflect that. BTW, people are paying right around invoice price for the 2004 F-150 which is about $5k off a $35k truck. GM & Dodge are paying similar prices, minus the rebates/incentives.

Sit in your neighbor's Avalanche. To see a small child playing on the ground, the child has to be 53 feet back according to Consumer Reports. Keep your kids away from those!

JOHNnDENVER Feb 25, 2004 03:34 AM

I test drove a couple of Silverado's, the handling of the F-150 was so much better, I could hardly even believe it. but then again, the 04 F-150 is hands down, bar none, the best riding handling truck I have ever drove. A few of my friends also agree after driving mine some. It is almost to good, no longer feels like a truck at all. That may end up being a bad thing for them in the end even, to refined... lol

Avalanche, what happens when a mountain of plastic is bolted to a pick-up. Would have to pay me to drive one. But Chevy has had a lot of problems lately, the latest is tailgates falling off for some unexplained reason.
I work for a worlds largest silicon maker, reason Fords interiors dont squeek is all fasteners and clips are coated with silicone.

This came out of BLOOMBERG magazine... BLOOMBERG is one of the top financial magazines...

General Motors Corp. could be forced to recall 4.5 million light trucks covering the 1999 to 2003 model years after federal officials upgraded a probe of tailgate failures and added 2003 Silverado and Sierra pickups and two years of Avalanche and Cadillac EXT autos to the investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its Web site that GM has 61,025 warranty claims related to the problem, which involves failures in cables that hold up tailgates. The additions more than double the number of vehicles involved since the probe began in October.

GM recalled more than 2.5 million U.S.-made vehicles earlier this month and last year recalled 7.4 million autos, more than twice as many as Ford Motor Co.
This month's recall included 127,000 Corvettes for a lock defect, 636,000 sport-utilities to fix wipers and 1.8 million cars such as the Chevrolet Cavalier for ignition switches that may catch fire.

Honestly, I think that for the most part all vehicles are equal. In my personal experience though, I'll gladly take my 91 F150 XLT Lariat as opposed to my Dad's 2000 Chevy S10.

horkn Feb 26, 2004 01:27 AM

love my fords. when i finally get to order my 04 (05 if this keeps up) i will be a happy man. as far as the recalled chevys...they need to recall even more of them. what happened about the " catastrophic front end failure" on the trailblazer chassis? my buddys wife just got a new envoy. hope the front end doesnt fall out of it at 70 mph.... and my ex roomies fiance has a 02 chevy truck that has piston slap (bad) but she fails to do anything about it even though she noticed it idles rougher than when it was new..... oh well, its their money....

on the same note though... i have a beater 91 olds calais quad4 that has 210,000 miles on it and barely had any work ever done to it. (at 60 k head gasket, and near 200k water pump and fuel pump)... however i just got a recall notice fore the "pile" for a ignition problem that could catch the car on fire. at this point i dont care... it still gets 30 mpg....
