Oil for the f 150 help

My dealer is telling me that i should be getting my oil changed there cuz they use the ford semi-syn oil..

It's the same price basically as taking it for an oil change anywhere else. Do you guys suggest using this oil or can i just use regular valvoline. and if i do conventional oil, can you switch back and forth to the semi syn if i want? Will regular work just fine?

what are your suggestions.. thanks in advance.

I use the same 5W-20 they use, but I buy it at Wally-World.

You would be better off using a full syn. Besides that I've seen pretty good stuff with the Motorcraft 5w20. I would use it before I would use the pennz stuff.

I believe that the motorcraft is made by conoco. The product is called hydroclear and uses a blend of Group II and Group III base stocks. The group III is a hydroisomerized/Dewaxed basestock with a high Viscosity index. I believe in the 140 area. It's a good product but not as good as a real Group IV or V synthetic.

BTW Amsoil's XL7500 line is Full Group III basestock with a really good additive package. You can get that in 5w20 as well.

If it were mine, I would run a full synthetic like Mobil 1 0w20, or Amsoil 0w30.

Motorcraft 5W-20 Question

I change the oil on my '97 4.6 F150 using Motorcraft 5W-30 religiously at every 3,000 miles (usually every 9-11 weeks). I also buy it at Wally World, where I have seen the Motorcraft 5W-20. Unfortunately, MOST of the driving I do is in stop and go Phoenix traffic and short trips...10 miles or less. Would it be beneficial for my engine to use the 5W-20 synth. blend for this type of driving? I don't want to extend the time between oil changes as I enjoy getting under the vehicle at least every few months to check everything out. I can't afford to go for Mobil 1 etc. but the Motorcraft 5W-20 would be do-able as it is only about 40 cents more a quart. So, my question is, if the oil is changed every 3K, will using the synthetic blend make a substantial difference in my engine's performance and longevity? Thanks oil gurus

Thumbs up

For Mobil 1 oil changes I usually get it done at Wally World. I found it's almost ten or more dollars cheaper to have them do it, vs. buying the oil and filter at Autozone. Yes I DO watch them like a hawk also,,,,98
