'02 '03 4.2's still POS's ???
 

Are the newer 6 cylinder (4.2) any good ? I guess the older one's were pretty crappy, has ford updated them? I guess they will not be in the new 150's

Seems like dealers cant give them away, I was thinking that if I could get one cheap enough (wholesale or below) It just might be worth it...

I dont do any towing, power isnt a real concern, good gas millage is.

I have had a 2000 and now I have a 2002 4.2L V6 and have not had any problems with either one. They did update them from the 97-98 year models and fixed the gasket issue and there are always changes every year.

I live near a big city of over a million and the town I live in has about 30,000 or more people and probably at least half of all the F150's I see here are XL models with the V6.

I work mine as hard as any V8 and so far my old one or the one I have now, have never gave me any problems. If you do get one, expect about 16-17 mpg on average driving conditions.

48K miles on my 2002, and not even so much as a bulb has burned out, it's been the most trouble-free, dependable vehicle I've owned, of ANY make. As some have said, the head-gasket problems seem to be isolated to the 97-98 models.

I have a '99 XL with the 4.2 - it's been trouble-free until just recently.

If you look hard enough, you'll probably find brand-new ones on several lots being sold at invoice - it's the bait for the switch the salesguy will want to make once you're on the lot. But if you don't care about bells and whistles, you'll probably be happy with it. Oh, and it will have the old body style, if I'm not mistaken.

If your main concern is gas mileage, get a 4.6L. They seem to do the best of the 3 (4.2L, 4.6L & 5.4L).

I had a '98 Scab with the 4.2L.

I have a '01 'Screw with the 5.4L.

The 'Screw gets the same city mileage and a little better highway mileage and is way more enjoyable to drive.

My brother has the 4.6L in a 'Scab and he consistently gets better milegae than my '98 did or my current '01 'Screw does.

I drove an 01 Scab 4.2 as a daily driver for two years. It's a fine engine if you don't need to do any serious towing, or drive agressive.

I't bullet prof for gas milage. I now have a 5.4 and if I take it easy can get just as good of milage, but I never got 10 mpg in the 4.2 like I did in the 5.4 one day last winter.

On the down side, I don't think there is a need for it. I think the 4.6 should be the standard engine, and the 5.4 as an option. I think I would have been just as happy with the 4.6.

The 4.2 has good pickup. It's much easier to chang the oil filter. It's a great truck when you compare it to that 74 Chevy that I drove years ago with three on the tree, had less power and less gas milage.

My cousins 99 4.2 sent a rod thru the pan from faulty lower intake gaskets,about 5-6 months ago! And ive read a few posts at other Ford truck websites about 2000 and 2001 4.2s doing the same! So,dont count them chickens just yet! :fyi:

I HAVE A 2002 4.2L AND IT HAS GIVEN ME NO PROBLEMS YET IT GOOD ON GAS AS LONG AS YOU DONT HAVE A LEAD FOOT ITS REAL EASY TO CHANGE OIL IT HAS OK POWER 202HP I BELIVE :beers:
