5.4L engine ticking noise

I know there are numerous posts addressing this subject but I have a few questions please. First I have a 1999, F250 4WD with the 5.4L engine (I have only had this a month) and 93,000 miles. The truck runs great except for the ticking sound on the drivers side. I can not hear the sound while sitting inside the truck only if standing near the front. Sometimes the sound seems to go away but it is the most of the time but again it is not loud enough to hear from inside the truck unless I am sitting at a light along side another vehicle and I have my window down. Even then the ticking is not very loud. I use valvoline 5W20. I had spark plugs replaced last week at a ford dealership.

My question is if there are others reading this post that have experienced a similar sound and have basically ignored it and it did not cause problems. Any responses would be appreciated.

Mine has the ticking. I have not ignored it but also haven't fixed it either. Mine started at 34000 miles and is still running fine at 56000.

Ticking

My 01 150 has the infamous ticking also, just started around 40,000 miles, and im at 52,000 now. i hear it mostly when i start the truck up then after it warms a bit, it quiets down. i will be taking mine to the dealer next week so it is looked at before my 60,000 mile warranty is up... anyone else have any info....

I have seen talk about it being EGR related. Minor exhasut leak that as the metal heats up the gap closes and the leak seals up( causeing the ticking to stop)

Ahh the ticking..

Hy guys,

my 99' Lariat 5.4 has had a very quiet tick that comes and goes..I have used Motorcraft 5-30 all along.

The tick started at 46,000 and has stayed with her to the present (167,000)..... it still ticks and have never had any problens with her. Runs strong....she just likes to tick, good ole windsor block.

Thanks 5.4Lariat. I have decided to worry more about mine when the noise stops than to worry about what noises it is making.

Mine too runs strong. Just never has sounded really like an engine that is getting the fuel it needs.

You have given me hope I will get the truck paid for before I have to toss an engine into it.

LOL

I get all of my parts at cost from Ford...however the 5.4 Longblock is still about 3k and some change, along with a hell of core charge. I just bought a 98' Katana 600 for less then a new longblock would cost.. aint that some ****. lol

Yall take care

5.4L engine ticking noise

"I had spark plugs replaced last week at a ford dealership"

I don't think I would trust the dealer to change sparkplugs in the 5.4L engine. It's too difficult of a job IMO.

Was the same ticking noise present before they did plug change?

"I had spark plugs replaced last week at a ford dealership"

This is a scary statement, and it's not even halloween yet.

I trust only myself to install the plugs into my 5.4 so if one blows I guess I am the one to get the blame for it.

My truck tick is not spark plug related. I am not sure what part is related and have one heck of a stock of changed parts that didn't fix it.

Ford did replace a head gasket on the right side of my engine. Tick remained.

The Ford guy did ok installing my plugs after the head gasket change. They were tight when I checked them.

Checking them was the tough part though because when it came back from ford 2 of the coil bolts spun freely in the plastic intake. That cost me 2 coils to fix because I wasn't about to take it back to Ford.
