Oil Misconceptions...
I have alot of experience with different oils and uses in differnt motors. I have a boat, a motorcylce an expedition a BMW 330ci and a mustang. Here is the deal with what you guys are probably interested first, the expedition. The factory recomends 5w-30 and change it every 5000 miles. This is more than adequete for a modern engine like that, one that is used every day and run normaly or run hard. Now my boat, I use synthetic, reason being is the motor cruises at 4000 rpms' and the motor sees 200 hours of use a year, and I change the oil every six to nine months depending on use and the tempeture runs around 280 to 300 degrees, that and it holds 12 quarts. Normal oil looses potency after 4 months or so, so synthetic is ideal for an application like this. Now the mustang, I run hard as hell, so I use normal oil for that, 10-40, I have hard miles on it and I change it every 3000 as miles or 3 months. And get this, the BMW recomends Castrol Syntec, I run this car pretty strong too, but no matter, they recomend 15,000 mile oil changes!!!! So my point is, using synthetic and changing it every 3000 miles is a HUGE waste of money and time. The motor in these things last a long time if they are kept up well. If you use synthetic, get 10,000 miles out of it at least, but I would just stick with what the factory recomends.
I use Amsoil 15w-40 synthetic in my boat (twin 350 magnums) and I change oil and filter in early spring and late fall every year. I also have a mustang that I run very hard. I use 0w-30 Amsoil synthetic in that and change it every couple of track events (road course events).
My F-550 I use 5w-30 extreme service Diesel also from Amsoil and also synthetic and I change it every 7-8 thousand miles
And even though I am an Amsoil dealer (sham job - its a multilevel marketing company and I do it b/c I have so many things that need oil) I put Mobil1 10w-30 in my 5.0L F-150 the other night b/c its all I could get on a Sunday.
just my $0.02 worth

Hey, if you are paying extra for synth that takes the licking and keeps on ticking, why would you want to throw good money away?!?!?! Hell send me that 3000mi synth and I'll put it in one of my vehicles and get 5000 more out of it.
Just change the filter every 3000 and top it off. It's the filter that keeps the evil out of your oil.....

I change my Mobil One 5W-30 and Mobil One oil Filter every 3,000 miles. This may be a waste of good synthetic but it is what I feel comfortable doing. Medic, you are welcome to have all of my used oil. Frankly, since it is my truck, I will continue to change oil and filter at what I am comfortable with because it is my truck!
