97 F150 4.2L Won't Start
The truck started to miss intermittently when warm and became hard to start. It would run normal after starting until warm. It would idle normal but as you tried to accelerate it would start missing...(especialy over 2500 rpms). Eventually (over one month) it started to miss all the time until it would not start at all. I have replace the plug wires and the ignition coil. I am thinking either the cpu or the fuel filter. You can hear the fuel pump when the key is turned on. I am trying to keep expenses down as the truck is going back to the leasing company this month. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you

Same problem
I am currently having the same problem you are. People are telling me that it might be the CPU ($650) bucks to install. Let me know if you find any other information.
Good luck |
PCM Cost
Dealer cost on the PCM is $250, don't let them rape you. I had to pay overnight shipping + $100 core charge because Superchips needed it to verify that it was their Microtuners fault, which it was.
The rest was labor. If I'd have known that's what it was, I would've replaced it myself, takes like 10 minutes. John |
PCM Reset
Beaver,
Did you try and reset your PCM? To do this, unhook negative cable on battery. Turn on ignition, turn on lights, leave for 15-30 minutes, TURN OFF IGN, TAKE OUT KEY, reconnect battery. John |
I pulled the fuel line that comes into engine compartment that goes into the valve assembly that is attached to the fire wall on the drive side and turned the key to see if I was getting any fuel. No fuel at that point so I am thinking either the fuel filter of fuel pump. I will try the filter first. test the output and input fuel pressure as I go. I will keep things updated. Thanks

check your fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay. Location for the 4.2 should be in your manual. I did both, but if the pcm is bad it will not tell the fuel pump to send the fuel.
Hate these damn computers, sometimes!! Although these vehicles are so much more improved over what we had in the 80's. John |
JBRIII,
I will try to reset the PCM this afternoon. I was able to retrieve information from the PCM using a scanning software on the datalink. Does this mean that the computer is OK, or can it still be bad? I checked my fuel pump, and I am getting gas past the fuel filter. I am thinking it is an electrical issue now. Thanks, Ray |
What next
Ok...changed the fuel filter and while I had the line off I turned the key on to ensure the fuel pump was working.......it is! Truck now starts for about 5 secounds and dies. Dies faster if you press the gas pedal. Reset the PCM and checked the fuel pump relay and fuses. Any thought from any body on this. Thanks again.
