Check Engine Light Code - P0401
Check Engine Light Code - P0401
My check engine light came on about 40 miles ago at 40,932. I went to autozone and got the code read P0401 - Insufficient flow (something) didn't write it down. Anyone know what this code actually means and what do I have to do to fix it. My truck is running fine. You can see what mods I have done to it in the sig. Thanks in advance

Reads:Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected. Thats all the info r the code book gives. Could be a partially plug line (Pinched etc.) or a bad EGR Valve. That about all I can offer.
My service engine light came on as well. My truck couldn't really breath with the crappy exhaust I had and clogged air filter housing. It still ran ok just didn't treally know why the light came on. Poor thing was neglecting for so long...Dosen't sound like anything major to me at all. One question for you though.....how does your truck perform and sound with that glasspack?
I love it. The sound is deep and throaty. I looked at all the options and prices for exhausts for the 4.2L and came to the conclusion that I should try something. I had read some earlier posts that going to an aftermarket exhaust some were satisfied and others wanted something else. I bought the cherry bomb at the local fleet farm store. With the clamps I put the thing in for about $20. I cut the existing muffler out and reused the existing tailpipe. You can hear that the exhaust is there but there isn't that much drone. A lot less than I thought there would be. I have had this set up on for about a year. I reset the computer after the install and didn't have any problems until my check engine light last week.
Performance I can say was improved by my feel only. My truck seems to have some spunk with attitude. I have to show people that my truck is not a v-8. My brother has a 1997 f150 with a glasspack but he went to a shop and had them custom bend a dual exhaust out of a single glasspack. He then added two 4" x 18" stainless tips. This amplifies his sound considerably. If you are looking at aftermarket exhaust spend the $20 and try it. you can always get the aftermarkets if you want something different.

my truck did that this week. i took it to leif johnson ford and they replaceed the flow sensor on the EGR valve. it ran fine before and after, but now the light is off (well its only been a day but so far so good). i only have 19000 miles, so it was under warranty. they also took care of the seatbelt recall for me, and they gave me a free focus rental for the day that they had my truck. that poor car only had about 50 miles on the odometer when i got it, and i helped to break in the engine!!!
anyway, i dont think that problem is really a big deal, because all the egr does is let smog into your intake from your exhaust manifold. i'm sure the engine would run fine if it was totally disconnected (supposedly the EGR lowers combustion temps, but i dont see how this is possible since its pumping hot exhaust gases into the intake - anyone wiser than me please explain!!!).
as a side note, my friend has a 94 camaro v6 and he disconneced his EGR valve and his car runs fine, but gets worse mileage than before.
