Question DPFE Sensor

Has anyone had any trouble with DPFE sensors in their trucks? I had one replaced at about 9k and now at 16k my "Service Engine Soon" light has come on again. The dealer replaced the first but I'm wondering why it went to begin with. The truck has a hesitation with a trailering effect.

I searched the web and found some general info but nothing specific about the F150. Really would like to figure this out.

'01 F150
4.2l 5-Speed
3.55 gears

Current Mods:

Gibson Super Truck
AirRaid FIPK

Modified 3.8Ls are seeing the same thing.

A free-flowing exhaust may be part of the problem. The DPFE is part of the EGR system and is calibrated based on exhaust backpressure. When that backpressure is drastically changed (exhaust system) the EEC may trigger a MIL.

The codes I see on the 3.8s and my 4.2 come and go periodically but have ZERO affect on performance or Fuel Economy. Resetting the EEC by disconnecting the battery is a short term fix.

There will be some new calibration chips out shortly that will be able to fix this permanently....

Ever since I modified my exhaust I have been running rich. Could this be the result of the DPFE getting the wrong calibration? Is there anything we can do to correct this? I dont get any Check Engine light but I do experience the slight hesitation along with the black sooty exhaust. Thanks in advance for your help.

I can fix that... The EEC will set a MIL for any short term fuel conditions that exceed around 22% lean. Even if its on tip-in....if it exceeds 22% it will set a code.

Even though the MAF may be programmed for 24#s injectors...which means they just changed the slope to compensate for more fuel...the rest of the calibration isn't. The EEC does look to the MAF to get air flow numbers but it also knows how much air it should see at a certain throttle position....and unless the MAF is dead nuts on you can get a MIL/set a code.

What are your long term plans for the truck?

That new calibration sure would be a help if the mods are the problem. I have already once contacted a chip manufacturer to find out if they will manufacture a chip that is calibrated for regular unleaded in the 4.2l. There are none so far but maybe if enough 4.2l owners request it......

Sure would be nice to have the option of running different grades of fuels and having a chip that could actively adapt and map the system for them.

AirRaid FIPK

Future Mod:
