Why would you spend 100 bucks for that when you can get a Motorcraft for less than $70 or a Denso, which is OEM, for less than $60? That MSD is no better than OEM.

I didn't.

Pricing and availability.

I could have ordered and waited for delivery. Motorcraft, with tax, was a little over $80. I got the MSD for $75 out the door.

Denso is the OEM? I didn't know that Denso produced the item for sale with a Motorcraft label. What else does Denso make, that is sold as Ford?

Denso makes a lot of stuff for all manufacturers... Same with Bosch and Delphi...

Visteon was owned by Ford and did a lot of OEM stuff for them, primarily coils. Ford sold them off in 2000 and a few years later, switched to Denso.

Use rockauto.com to research parts, if they are genuine OEM it will be indicated.

I try to check the InterWeb for pricing. Rock Auto is a pretty good resource. Only problem is with Rock Auto, when you get to the checkout screen, the shipping cost, split from different warehouses, brings the "out the door" pricing up.

For this part, I found it at a local auto parts store. Owner calls it a "speed shop". Whatever. He's still selling auto parts. Expensive auto parts. But good when it's in stock, and you don't want to or can't wait for shipping. He carries more of the higher priced and specialty items that I can't buy from Manny, Moe, & Jack. Large chain stores do not carry performance parts, and often times, parts that are close to OEM quality. I hate going to chain auto supplies to find that they only carry off-brand or house brand parts, that I know will fail.

"Mr,. (redacted), you've had this V6 coil for about 10 years. Ford hasn't made a car that uses this part in about 10 years. None of those cars are collectors items. Most of those cars are no longer on the road. You'll never sell this thing. Give me a good price, where you don't lose money, I save money, and you get it off your hands. I always come in here to give you first crack at selling me stuff, before I go to another shop or order online."

$75. I had to pay cash. No receipt. No return. And I better buy more stuff from him later. Lucky to have independent shops where the owner actually wants to do business and take care of customers.

Pricing varies. Put down whatever you're drinking, before reading further. I choked on my beverage when I saw it. Advance Auto Parts / Car Quest wants more than the dealer parts counter for the same OEM Ford MotorCraft.

With all the pricing aside, I still prefer Motorcraft on the 4.2l. Less chance of issues arising and having to do "double work" or troubleshooting of "rogue issues" because of non-OEM parts.

Interesting insight on the OEM part failure.
