oil low on dipstick after oil change

2000 Windstar, after last oil change the oil on dipstick is at 3/4 qt down. It's been going lower after each oil change the last 5 yrs or better. I'm not adding any more oil over 5 qts, it's never used oil between changes. When Windstar was new, the oil came up to the full mark after a change. Have you ever come upon a quirk like this? Strange days in Wenatchee.

Check the dipstick tube. Make sure that sucker is in there... you don't want that coming out of the crankcase while you are driving.

Also, make sure it isn't rusted and cracked where the dipstick is just coming out of the tube.
