2006 4.2 gears

Hello everyone,

First time poster but I've followed the forum for years. I've searched alot and haven't found an answer so I apologize if this has been covered. I bought my 1st f150 a few years ago 2006 f150 4.2 regular cab 5 speed with 3.55 rear end it's got 100k on it. My question is this why is reverse so fast? I have to ride the clutch way too much to back up. It's literally 8-10mph when I'm fully off the clutch. I would like to purchase a small pop-up camper and tow it. It'll be well under the max towing of 3,700lbs more like 2,000lbs or less fully loaded. And I'm worried about backing up in campsites with how fast I have to go. Can I re-gear to another set of gears that would help towing and reverse? Maybe a 4.10? Any advice is welcome! Thank you!

If you let the clutch out slowly without your foot on the gas, the electronic throttle should keep it from stalling.

Yes, 4.10's would help a lot, but they would cost you about $800 installed.

thanks for your response. Will that not burn the clutch up? If I did re-gear will that affect reverse at all?

No, it will not burn the clutch up. It will slowly start moving, remaining at idle. I know it's counter-intuitive, but it works. The computer will keep it from stalling if you let it out slow enough.

Regearing affects all gears.
