98 F150 4.2 V6 trouble starting

The truck has recently begun having problems starting. It has new spark plugs and wires, new fuel pump and filter, I just changed the oil and flushed out the heater core (heat wasn't working, works great now). So, is the next step the injectors? It has 238xxx miles and I'm pretty sure those are the original injectors. I can force it to start every time, but I have to push the gas to do so.

If it starts when you give it some gas, I'd suspect the IAC (idle air controller). If it idles and runs fine, I'd just keep starting it by giving it some gas.

You could put some Techron in the gas to clean the injectors.

I took off the intake and it all looks really clean. I'll get some intake cleaner and clean the IAC, but I really have to lay on the gas to get it to start.

If you have to FLOOR it to get it to start, your injectors are leaking. Flooring it shuts the fuel pump off.

WD-40 is best to clean the IAC. Spray it in and work the plunger with a small screwdriver.

I don't always need the gas to start it, but when I do I have to floor it. I have injectors on order and will be replacing them shortly.

Could possibly be the fuel pressure regulator - pull the vacuum line off it and see if it drips any fuel. If it does, the diaphragm is cracked and needs to be replaced.

Other than some where along the fuel lines, I'm not sure where the fuel pressure regulator is. I was trying to find it online, but that was not very helpful. Some said it was integrated into the fuel rail and others had a picture of a part I could not locate. The cheaper the fix, the better. I really appreciate all the help and input.

The FPR is on the rail, it has a vacuum line on it.

I haven't been able to get at the truck since the last time I posted, it belongs to my wife's friend, but there is something new it started. I am planning to try and look at it again this weekend, but she was driving the other day and as she was slowing down to come to a stop, the truck died. She said it took her three tries to get it to start again, but it finally did start. Any new thoughts or still probably the same problems? Thank you in advance for any input.

If it were me, I would pull the top intake off, clean the injectors and check function, replace O-rings, check for leaks, replace vacuum lines, replace gaskets, clean and lube all electrical connections including MAF, IAC, TB, etc.

Late reply

Sorry for the late reply. After thoroughly cleaning the IAC, checking for leaks, and a plethora of other things, I took it back to OReillys to have to codes read again. I knew it was throwing a code for O2 sensors. Well, the first guy didn't scroll down far enough to see the code for the engine temp sensor. It was reading engine overheat all the time. So flooring it was giving it enough gas to start. Replaced the sensor and no problems starting since.
