1500 miles in on the eco - fuel economy

Hey all,

wanted to share my fuel economy stats from a few fillups now.

first tank was 14.6 and that was with the dealer delivering it, so who knows how they drove it.

second tank was 16.6 and was about 30% highway in there

third tank was 14.4 and i towed a trailer full of christmas trees for an eagle scout project one day (just after breaking 1000 miles)

this tank that I haven't refilled yet is indicating 16.0 with about 40% highway. I notice the MPG goes way up at 60-65, i was all the way up to 17 on the MPG gauge on the truck before driving city miles and dropping it back to 16 flat.

I am going to go fill up today before i head to my folk's place for the ol' christmas gathering, and with the exception of the first tank (it indicated 15.5 on the dash) the dash indicator and my actual MPG math have been within .1 of each other.

keep in mind, I have the 3.31 rear end, and its bone stock. Not sure i will mess with it much except maybe an amsoil air filter. gotta recoup my money from buying this beast!

one thing I have been doing now that I broke through 1000 miles is i have been getting on it a little harder from time to time, still have not gone WOT yet, but i romped it a bit when a driver did a panic stop to make a left turn and I smoked the tires into the intersection (traction control of course took it away shortly after) with a 60% throttle estimate.

that caught my attention and my passenger's attention real quick! hahaha!

anyway my MPG average according to fuelly.com is 14.8 as of the writing but should go up with this fillup I am planning this morning.

From what I can tell, i will be getting much better mileage than i did with my 04, and I don't think this is really broke in until about 5000 miles anyway.

Thanks for sharing positively and giving a good timeline. Glad you're not complaining about not getting 25 mpg yet and want your money back

KingJR 12-24-2013 12:14 PM

LOL yes! i don't expect 25...but I do expect to get at, or close to, the 17 combined as advertised over time.

might be making a run to santa fe, NM in the next few months which would be a great highway test.

KMAC0694 12-24-2013 12:41 PM

17 should be plenty doable

KingJR 12-24-2013 12:48 PM

last truck averaged 14.5 over the time i tracked it. so 17 would be super.

That should be easily doable as long as your right foot isn't very heavy. I averaged high 14s over the 155,000 miles I drove my 05 with the 5.4. A few times if I babied the truck I could pull out pretty good numbers but not consistently. My lifetime average through 55,000 on the EB has a lifetime average of 16.9. That includes towing a bunch of trailers, driving the truck like I stole it, burning off the factory tires and driving like a responsible person every once in a while. My truck has 3.55s so you have a slight advantage. Something you have going against you is the higher altitude in Colorado. I was out there last summer and notice I was getting slightly less MPGs. I also had a loaded truck so that could have had a lot to do with it. At the higher altitudes the EB really shines. I crossed 12,000 a few times pulling a small camper and I was breathing harder than the truck was.

I care barely eek out high 11s with how I drive. Wonder what I'd get with an EB or a 5.0

I average 16.5 MPGs running 34.5" mud terrains with my Eco with 50/50 driving. 50% city/50% highway 50% driving conservatively/50% flogging the snot out of it.

Since these pics i have put on about 800 miles in the last 4 days, i love my truck and its mpgs.

KingJR,

I bought my 4x4 Platinum Eco with 3.31 gears in October of 2013. The 2nd day I had it, I (plus my wife and two dogs) headed from Austin to Santa Fe, NM for a long weekend and averaged 17.5MPG for the entire trip running 75-80MPG for 85-90% of the entire trip.

I bet you may do a bit better as you will be coming down from a higher altitude (I believe..?) so if you can keep it lower than 75MPG I bet you will be touching 18-20 or so.

Good Luck and enjoy the ride quality of the truck... it is fantastic in my opinion!

just towed a dump trailer 80 miles around the area picking up recycle christmas trees as a fund raiser for the scout troop, my starting MPG was 15 and dropped quickly to 13 MPG with a half tank of gas...it leveled off at 13 and didn't move during the towing test. Trailer was not very heavy, but i bet combined weight of trailer and trees 4000 pounds. 4x4 high was on and it was snowing heavily...

absolutely impressed with the truck! Even at 3.31 gears...

I have driven to santa fe a few times (with my last truck), my brother lives there and I did some contract work down there last year. I expect to be going back in the next few months to add more cameras to a building down there.

I noticed in my 04 that going down MPG sucked, but coming home it was fantastic. I think i actually climb gradually once into NM on I-25. but yes with nearly 2000 miles on the truck now i notice it "loosening" up and the tailpipe is not coated in black gunk anymore. So maybe that first 1000 was running way rich.... MPG is climbing around town too very slowly.

KingJR 01-06-2014 10:18 AM

pic doesn't show MPG but just the cluster on trailer mode.

2200 miles on the eco now...

updates on MPG after filling last night. This pic is after two trips to windsor from loveland (20 minutes) at 50-60 MPH. started at 16.3 and ended at 16.9

had the cruise on just to see how much "pedal" the truck thought i needed:

tomorrow is a real test, i am pulling a trailer that I believe weighs 5000 to 6000 pounds to Golden full of recycle electronics. I intend on making a youtube video for it since not all the videos online are really useful to me. they show trucks pulling... but they don't show the cargo, speeds, MPG in real time, etc... I have carefully thought how I am going to do this so I hope it turns out good. we will see...

Later!!

DOUROS81 01-16-2014 01:54 AM

What type of gas are you running? My friend went to 93 to get better MPG's. His truck sucked with Winter Blended fuel in it.

KingJR 01-16-2014 09:18 AM

i have been running 91 octane the whole time. Sams club here has 91 for the same price as the other stations selling 87. We can't get anything hotter than 91 here in northern colorado.
