Got pinging, need help!
 
I bought a 150 2wd with automatic and V6. I love the truck although I have already gotten the dreaded door crack. Anyway it has started to ping under mild acceleration, and sometimes just going up a hill. Its got 46k on it. Any ideas where i should start? I'm handy and have most tools, just give me something to look for.

I would try resetting the computer and try using some fuel injector cleaner..

run some premium gas after that and check it out

agreed, especially with the higher octane fuel.

I had slight pinging in my 4.2 until I reset the computer and started running 89 octane gas.It fixed the problem entirely. Just my 2 cents.

I would try using a tank full of premium gas, and the fuel injector cleaner, but also I found that certain brands of gas cause the problems to come back, try different brands and see which one your truck likes best. Hope it helps.

It sounds too easy. Anyone know what injector cleaner is best? I thought for sure I would have to change plugs, wires etc.

I'm afraid to ask this next one. How hard is it to change the front timing cover gasket. I've got a small leak I think. So far, I don't think it is leaking in the crankcase.

The best fuel system cleaner I've ever used is made by Redline. You can find it in most speed shops,and at Pep Boys too I believe. Cured the rough idle I had in half a tank. Great stuff!!! https://www.f150online.com/f150board/biggrin.gif

Haven't been on the boards in a while. Noticed your truck dropped finally. That is really clean looking. I like it alot. Plus that airdam adds alot also. Keep up the good work man.

97 Timing cover recall
 
Capri,there is a recall for the front timi ng cover gasket.Contact a FORD dealer,give them your VIN and they will run an "oasis" to see if has been recalled.Good luck!:D

Remove the negitive battery cable. Not the positive because you could get sparks. Anyway remove the negitive cable and alot of people say turn your lights on to ensure all the power is drained. That's not a bad idea though I don't think it's really needed. What it is doing is removing power from the computer. When that happens and you put the negitive cable back on (wait like 5 mins) it repowers the computer and makes it reset itself. Just like your home computer when you have a problem and your memory screws up shuting it down clears all the memory.

Do know that once you have reset the computer your truck will have to relearn its ideal etc. so it make run kind of crappy for a short period of time don't worry.

I have been using Valvoline fuel injector cleaner with every oil change at 3,000 miles. I have approx. 28,000 miles on it and no problems what so ever. I got that advice from the experts here as well as the Ford tech's where I bought my truck. Not the valvoline, just a good quality brand of which Redline is for sure I just can't find it in the stores out here. God I miss calif.

However, Monday 10/14 I will be getting my Redline Max ATF trans fluid for my manual, and thier 75W-140 rear-end oil so next weekend I will be changing both. I had to order it online. Fuel injector I will go with Valvoline because it is good, however I want the very best for the tranny and rear-end, and please no post about Amsoil, yes its a great quailty, but no it is not worth the price.

No, you want the truck off when you go to reset the computer. If your alternator is functioning correctly then the truck would remain running even with the battery disconnected.

NOTE:

Some of the other post suggest using a higher octane fuel to stop the pinging (like 93) only try that for one tank full. Your next tank fill should be with the recommended 87 octane. If the pinging returns and you have already tried to reset the computer then you will need to take it in to have it checked.

Never use the higher octane to get rid of the pinging it is only masking a problem that could develop into something more serious and maybe more costly to repair later on.
