Post tach

I'm new to F-150 Online, and I was just wondering of anyone has installed a tach on their V-6? If so how what kind and how long did it take?
Thanks in advance

I did Today. It was a sunpro 2 5/8 Mini tach. It took about 3 hrs after finding the wires on the back of the Gauge cluster White with a pink stripe on the center connector is for the tach signal. Used a switchable power line from the same connector for Power. Light was connected to the headlight switch and ground was connected to the steel plate just under where the Electric break is for towing. Sorry I cannot remember the colors of the other 2 wires. Its not hard just need a 12 volt lighted probe and some electrical connections

My truck came with a tac from the factory. I have a friend that did not have this option. He bought a aftermarket white face instrument panel that had a tac with it. It hooked up real nice. And it looks real good. I've seen tacs at pep boys for over a hundred dollars. His cost was 137.00 for his, but it looks custom. It looks just like the ones that come from the factory only white. Anyway, just a suggestion.

Tuscon: Do you remember where your friend bought his tach setup? A friend of mine doesn't have one and would like to change out his cluster. Thanks in advance.

Ok, he got his from a junk yard. It cost him 27 dollars for the cluster. Then he bought the insert. I'm sure you could get one from Ford. It would probably cost a lot though. There has to be someone who sells a aftermarket version.

I'm interested in the redline for a 4.2 V6 (1999). The owners manual says that continued driving with the RPM needle pointing straight up can cause engine damage... I have to say that that's a bit vague. I'm not a lead-foot, but I've been over 4000 during passing. Any help would be appreciated.

4x4Nut,
I want to know if you did anything else to hookup your tach. I got the same tach and i have a 99 xl. I found the wire on the back of the instrument cluster and tapped into it but it did nothing and i tried every other wire back there and nothing. Also what year is your truck cause they may of changed it in my year if they are different. Thanks.
