Dyno results
Did Airaid give anybody a dyno reading of what kind of horse power the throttle body spacer made for the 4.2? Besides Superchips, it seems that these companies that make after market performance parts don't bother to dyno thier product to see what kind of power increase it makes. It seems that they take it for granted that if it worked on another application, they can design a part that will fit on any other engine and it will make horsepower. How do we know if they didn't even dyno test thier product? I've had the experience with a few companies that make products that i have inquiered about that don't have any dyno test on thier products. Can anybody relate to my pain! If anybody has the information on how much power the poweraid made on the dyno for our 4.2's, would you please let me know? If poweraid has the dyno results, then I'll consider shelling out $100 for thier product! Taxman
Hi Taxman,
You raise a very interesting point!
What we've found is that most of the "reputable" aftermarket manufacturers do in fact do dyno testing, but even then it can be problematic, depending on just how the vehicle was configured for the dyno pulls, and what kind of dyno was used.
There are a number of parts being brought to market not by the "normal manufacturing chain", but by "players' in the distribution chain who see manufacturer's like K&N selling tons of FIPK kits, and they want to get into the act themselves, and this is exactly how the Airaid brand of airbox elimination kit was "born", I happen to know that company. And I'm delighted they did, as I feel the Airaid kit is a little bit better quality in terms of it's mounting system design.
I can tell you that we've seen a good 8-10 hp from the Airaid kit for the 4.2 F-150 V-6, but don't know what the Poweraid throttle body spacer makes on the dyno on the 4.2 V-6, though some informal observations we've seen on 4.6 & 5.4 V-8 F-150's indicate that it's not adding appreciable power gains used in conjunction with an airbox elimination kit.
Today, more and more smaller relatively inexpensive parts (say, under $200 or so)brought to market by the distribution players instead of "genuine" manufacturers are not being dyno'd to determine their exact level of effectiveness. Or, just as you mentioned, they'll make the part and know that it works on one vehicle, and make it for a number of others *assuming* it will have the same effect on them, when it may or may not.
In my experience, you won't find very many $100 parts with dyno results, it just doesn't happen in that relative price range very often.
What is the answer?
An even better question, and I don't know "the definitive" answer to it, but one thing that helps tremendously is having access to F-150 Online and all it's participants who are using these products, to get their overall feedback, and that's a pretty good way to help determine if a particular part is worthy of your interest, though it of course still won't give you dyno results.
I don't think you're ever going to see dyno results for that spacer, of course, I'm obviously just guessing here, but that's my hunch, just due to it's relative price range, it usually doesn't happen with relatively lower-cost types of parts very often.
If you alrady have the Airaid kit to eliminate your factory airbox (which we highly recommend), I probably wouldn't opt for the spacer on top of it.
For our vehicles here at Performance, we use airbox elimination kits for every one of them that a kit is available for, and we do not do anything else to the air intake tract, as we do not feel that it's worthwhile on our vehicles for our purposes.
I know this doesn't help you any, but I thought I would at least drop you a quick line, to offer perhaps a little bit of perspective.
Best of luck with your truck and whatever you decide to do to/with it!
