Does anybody have an idea what motor is a direct replacement to my 1997 F-150 4.2 5speed my truck has been back to the garage 4 times to find out why it makes every thing sooty.I put on a aftermarket cat back system so it wouldnt turn my tire black now it turns my tailgate black.So if anyone has an idea which engine i can put in place of it.

Hey we're trying to figure out the cause right now. There might be a connection to the materials in the plastic gas tank. Mines still in the shop, check out bad fuel tanks and the rusty fuel injector posts, also have you had any problems with fuel pressure, or fuel injectors? or just the sooty exhaust?/
Please let me know I'm wondering if there is a connection or just a coincidence and maybe we need to look for something else.

well, if ya really want a new motor the 4.6 should mount up in there with an auto or a manual.The 5.4 might also do the same not sure about onn the manual though
