Idle Speed at Startup
I am the proud new owner of a 2000 F-150 XL with the 4.2L and a 5-speed. Love it and this site so far. Except....
When I first start the engine (Cold or Warm) the engine will idle fast for a long time (4 or 5 minutes). It does this when the engine is started warm AND cold. Is this normal?
I had an '87 S-10 2.8 V-6 that would do the same thing, but only for about less than a minute. With the old truck, I would just wait for the idle to come down, then shift into drive.
It seems odd that a brand new truck (less than 2K miles) would take so long to "warm up". One last thing, is it better (on the engine) to shift into 1st and take off, or wait for the idle to come down first? 4 or 5 minutes can seem like an eternity...
I love this site and its great to read all this good info. Thanks.

I have 1998 XLT 4.2L and my truck also does the same thing. Another thing is it isn't all the time just sometimes. Someone out there should know about this. Should I get this to my dealer before my warranty runs out or what?
