Thumbs up Airaid Results

Got about 50 miles on it - here is my opinion

Noticeable power increase above 4,000 rpm

Much throatier sound from 3,200 rpm up

Drives and sounds exactly like stock below 3000 rpm.

Verdict - if you've got the spare change and want more top end power and a racier sound at full throttle, this is just what you are looking for! If you want more low rpm torque for towing/hauling, don't expect a difference.

Question

Does it make a whistling sound like I have read about with the V8 model? Did you get a good deal from the online store?

No whistling sound. Just a throaty roar at wide open throttle - an improvement to my ears. I had the windows up. I'll roll the windows down next time I drive and see if I hear a whistle.

I bought at the introductory price for the online store which was $199.95 + shipping. If it is available slighlty cheaper somewhere else, I still would buy here to save myself time and support this great site. I got mine only 4 days after ordering.

I'm very satisfied with the product. The installation instructions were less than perfect, but install is still easy.

Dirt Bike Dave,

Does the Airaid make use of the stock airbox, or is the K&N filter left exposed under the hood? Most of the ad pictures I have seen show the filter exposed, but I don't know if that is the way it is installed or just to show in the ad that K&N is the filter. The reason I ask is I wonder if the efficiencies gained in airflow would be offset by the increased temperature of the intake charge by removing the airbox? Living in Texas, heat can become an issue for me.

Regardless, it sounds like it's working fine for you. An increase in power from 4000 rpm up is something I am needing from my truck. Bottom end is pretty good, but I need a little more highway power.

Thanks for the post. I've been waiting to hear from someone who installed the Airaid on a 4.2

Chewie,

Welcome to the boards! The Airaid is exposed and does not use the airbox. The reason for this is to allow more air to enter the filter. The air box is too restrictive, that is why this a great mod. I don't think that the heat is too much of an issue even here in Dallas. Just think of all of those little Hondas running around with their intakes(yes alot of them have it). As soon as I can raise the funds this mod is the next thing I buy.

Snow White is exactly right.

While the filter is exposed in the engine compartment, it is about as far away from the engine as possible. I've seen some discussion that underhood temps are high and might cost power, but I think this would be a bigger problem when the vehicle is not moving, such as during a dynometer test. The F150 has a big engine compartment and there is a lot of opportunity for outside air to get in at speed.

Question

Dirt Bike Dave,

Did a filter come with the kit or did you have to buy it seperately?

It comes with the filter. It is a K&N, but not the same filter as if you already bought a K&N filter element for your stock intake.

Question

Well how true is it that you only notice the power above 4,000 RPM. Is anything notice under normal driving conditions? I was expecting to get noticeable results as I drive normally. I want to notice the power as I did with my superchip. Any comments will help, thanks!

I installed my Airaid about 10 days ago. I too noticed a real increase in top end power. As Dirt Bike Dave says the most power is under full throttle and the noise emitted is throatier. The K&N filter is exposed, but it is attached to a bracket which is in turn mounted on a plate below which will block mud and water but not airflow. I also agree with the install directions. They need some fine tuning.

Thanks to the improvement from the Airaid I went and installed a Superchip last weekend. These to mods alone make for a wonderfully responsive truck.

Dear JDm,

If you will carefully read JLMCPW's post just above, you'll see that he answered that specific question very well.

Just wanted to point that out to you in case you hadn't read it yet......
