Does anybody have any experience with pulling a 14-16 ft jon boat with a boat trailer on the 97-03 extended cab v6's? How bad does it do on gas?

 

No sweat man, you won't even know it's back there. I regularly tow a 16 ft. aluminum boat and I can barely tell it's back there. However, this could all be different based on how your truck is set up. With that said, what tranny do you have? AT\MT? What gears do you have? Size tires?

 

I think that regardless of how your your truck is built any F150 will tow that boat no problem aluminum boats are so light you wont even feel it back there, even when the boat is on the trailer you can pick the tongue up and move it around pretty good, I wouldnt worry about it at all.

 

yep, youll barely feel it. your biggest concern should be forgetting its back there when ur towing it and clipping something when you turn

 

I towed my 21' 3600lb Maxum a couple times with my V6 5spd before I traded, you wont even know a little jon boat is back there

 

unless its weighed down with a crapload of lead, yes.

i mud race and i pull a 18foot car trailor with a 1ton chevy big block chevy 42inch tires and full of mud ...really really heavy...and both of my 08 f150 4.2 and 02 f150 4.2 pulls great pulls better than 05 chevy 4x4 5.3......pulled case bachoe 40 miles....wouldnt reccomend it but my f350 was broke down so i just hooked on and went...did fine..

I've towed 6000# with my '99 4.2l V6 and beat the heck out of it. I never had any troubles with it. From the last Carfax I did on it, it had something like 200k on it. So it's still turning it's wheels.

My '07 has given me small issues... but it has never left me stranded.

6k and change is no problem, so a little boat will be effortless.

 

nah man you'll be fine. buddy of mine has a 2001 4.2 single cab 5speed and he pulls his 23' boat like its nothin.

he had a chevrolet before this truck and hey was surprised when he could pull the boat so easily (stoppings a problem he has drums) and i said yea get use to it, thats what fords are good for

 

I get a kick out of people saying you need a v8 for towing... Why?

First things first... having that nifty 5.4l V8 under the hood for example is great for getting that heavy load up to speed or to pass ManualF150 pulling his trailer following the designated speed limit because he is doing the speed limit and it is apparently too slow for the person in the 5.4. BUT what about stopping that load? That's what people don't realize.

I've towed ~3000 to 4000 lbs with my '07... even with those discs, it takes a longgggg time to stop a wimpy trailer. I can only imagine 5000-6000 lbs on an F150, plus a super cab or crew cab, and the weight of a bigger engine. Plus the fact that the automatic doesn't downshift automatically.

Yet I see people with Tundras, F150s, 1500s with these huge trailers, v8's, passing people like there is no tomorrow, riding people's bumpers, etc. They then wonder why they eat through brake pads, or rear end people, or better yet loose control.
