Let's talk Intakes...
 

I've been thinking alot about all the various Intakes out there....I would like to improve on the stock Set-up. I did the Tech Tips Intake Mod. at the top of the page...It's in the Tech. Articles. It was an easy Mod. and even though I still had the Stock Paper Filter in, The truck did run better. I was worried how the filter would hold up to rain and muck splashing up from the road, So I changed it back to stock. I would imagine if I had an Aftermarket Fiter in....The Mod. would of even been more impressive.


My question is...I wonder if I spend $238 on the Air Force 1...How much better would it be over the Tech Tips Mod. with an Aftermarket Filter? The Tech Tip Mod. would only be the cost of a Filter..say $40 Would the Air Force 1 be worth the Extra $200?

Either way you have a exposed filter that would get splashed with Road Grime.. I wish I knew of an Enclosed system for the older 4.2's...Seems you can get one from Banks, but it's for 04 and up...

My Air Force 1 stays pretty clean but I don't do any extreme 4x4'ing or anything. I think the K&N set up is similar with an added protection sheild of some kind. I've even seen some on here re-use the black plastic cover off of the original intake set up and fabricate their own protection for the after market intakes. I don't know anything about the intake you mention, though.

I just got off the phone with a guy from Airforce 1....He said the 97thru99 4.2's the filter sits on top of the fenderwell, and is protected from splashes and stuff...that's all I was concerned with. I do not see me offroading this truck.

i wouldnt worry about water in the filter. if your off roading enough to be up to he hood in water then you need a humvee with the snorkel setup lol.

Yeah for sure...I'm just wondering how the Tech Tips Intake Mod. with a K&N Filter, would do against the Mighty Airforce 1 ?

i have the tech tips mod on my truck. i removed the cover, and ran a K&N filter, works great!!! My gas mileage went up on the highway, and i havent gotten any water or dirt in my intake, and ive done some offroading in it. Had it on for a few months with no problem.

I gotta say, that MAC Intake with the conical filter, looks pretty good for $160...But I'm still thinking you can get close to that with the Tech Tips Mod. and an Aftermarket Filter...Maybe you can get an Aftermarket Filter that's Conical in shape....So you can be sucking air in through the end of the filter...

If you replace the restrictive 2 1/4'' (thats a guess, but close) tube with a smooth 3'' you will gain performance.
