engine swap (sure yall have heard this before)
 
i have a 99 f150 with the 4.2. it has about 140,000 miles on it and i was looking to see what all i would need to swap a 4.6 liter engine into it. i have been searching for it and it seems like everyone says different things about what people need for the swap. some say you need to change the tranny, others say it will bolt right up? im confused i would like to know how much this will cost, i have an extra vehicle i can use on the side while the project is going. the truck is paid off and im in high school making about 1500 extra a month so im sparing no expense i want it done right.

i would just like to know what needs to be done. any and all input is greatly apprecieated :help:

i kno this has nothing to do with what your talking about i wish i could help but i was wondering what your doing making 1500 a month...and how long your working..

well im a delivery driver for a pizza joint here in town i make 5.50 an hour and i average about 50 cash take home pay a night in tips.i work on average about 45 hours a week and im a half day senior. so i have a few hours to myself before 4:00 rolls around and i work til about 9:45 on weeknights and weekends i pull 10-12 hour shifts on saturday and sunday. but anyways, my spare vehicle is a lil nissan pickup so if my ford project takes a good while it wont be a loss for me. i would get the 5.4 but ive heard things about swapping the entire drivetrain along with the motor and the wire harness. and by the time i spend all that money into the truck i could have just saved and bought another vehicle.. but i wont get rid of this one because it was a gift from my grandfather and ill keep it for a good long time. but no disrespect to ford im a chevy man but if something is given to me that is nicer than what ive got im not going to try to get something better out of it. in my family thats like a slap in the face. so i want to do quite a bit to this truck to make it really something else.

any other feedback is appreciated

have you thought about just upgrading your 4.2 v6? they can be pretty powerful... do a search on google for v6 f150 and all your answers will be solved...

U do know that stock with the 4.2 you can run with the 4.6 right? thats a worthless swap, go 5.4 or go home. Or hell, take that 2k and go pay someone to do a turbo setup. the only thing better about the 4.6 is the v8 sound, but its not worth the price.

Agreed. Either stick with the 4.2 or just see if you can swing a deal on a used 5.4 I wouldn't mess with the 4.6 unless it's just burning a hole through your pocket. 4.2V6 and 4.6V8's share the same everything.

Wrong! The 4.2 and 4.6 do share the tranny names 4R70W or whatever, but the there are two different part numbers for the trannies. The bolt pattern or the bellhousing is different amoung the two because the 4.2 is a pushrod motor and the 4.6 is a modular motor (over head cams).

You can however, bolt up a 5.0 or a 5.8 V8 to the 4.2L 4R70W tranny because those motors are pushrod motors.

I believe they ment that both motors have about the same power and there is not a worth while differance with all the work swapping them.

As was stated the Modular engines, (4.6 - 5.4 - 6.8) use a different transmission bell housing pattern. Your 4.2 tranny will have to be changed too.
I would also have to agree get a 5.4 or nothing. Go to a bone yard and find a used 5.4, 4R70W tranny, a PCM from a a 5.4 truck of the same year. You will also need the PCM, Engine and tranny harnesses.

yeah i agree, if you want to swap from a 4.2l and go through all that trouble you better get the 5.4l
