v6 to v8

Anyone have any experiance changin engines?

I have a 4.2 v6f150, and will be changing to a 302 very soon.

Anyone know of any little things i need to look at now, or i may overlook?

one question i have now, is will this bolt up to my current transmission? I know people pushing thier 5 speed manual with more power than this engine, so i will be okya if it'll bolt up.

the engine will prob be somthin close to this..

Is the 302 fuel injected? What will you use to control the engine? They have a 4.6 for $2595.00, Why not get that? You will have $2300.00 left over.

BTW the bolts should match up. See;

Who's they? I would be interested in switching out my 4.2 V6 for the 4.6 V8 whenever it is that my 4.2 wears out (right at 63K now).

I don't see the modular 4.6 in there at all.

It says 91-96, that won't work cause it's not OBDII. Plus that's just a longblock, you'd need a turnkey motor for a conversion....

Howdy,

The bolt pattern for the 4.2l V-6 is the same as the 302/351 ford. I would use a 5.0 from an '98 or so Explorer....'bout 265 hp, they're OBD-II and you can get them used for under $1,000.00. Try www.car-part.com

I want a white lightning, but i'm only 17 and I got the best deal and it was a 4.2. After 3 or 4 years i'm going to trade it in for a 2000-03 lightning and that will be sweet. Also what would be sweet if i had the money id put a 5.4 SC Engine in my sport and make it a sleeper and tell people its a six and then i would smoke the hell out of them and i would love to see their faces when they hear the scream of the supercharger. PLus my friend with his bitchin camaro would have a truck that would give him a truck a run for his money.:D

Ive thought about doing that to a shortbed Ranger, just because I am jealous of all the lightning owners. I want to watch their faces as they get beat (or at least closer then they thought) by a sleeper Ranger. Or I could just save up my money for a long time and buy an L. :D

Didn't SVT do that? They didn't do it for production, I guess just for fun, but I saw it on some show. It was called the Lightning Rod or something.

So are the 4.2 to 4.6 or 5.4 swaps pretty straightforeward? Will the manual tranny be up to the extra horsepower, or would I need to upgrade or change my tranny? How would that affect the weight balance? Would I need to compensate with a different suspension setup?

I've been thinking, if I ever get the money, I want to drop in a supercharged 4.6 or the 5.4.

How about a Windsor or a Cleveland?

stengun 10-18-2003 10:54 PM

Howdy,

The bellhousing bolt pattern is different on the 4.6/5.4 than the 4.2 V-6. The 4.2 V-6 is the same as the SBF (302/351w or 351C). So if you go w/ the 4.6/5.4 you will need a new trans. But if you go with a '98 Explorer 5.0, just get the computer (bout $75) and engine wiring harness ($50) and drop it in w/ the 4.2 trans. This is alot cheaper and more power!

The engine mounts are the same? And the tranny can handle it?

Sounds good. How is the aftermarket for that engine?

stengun 10-19-2003 10:48 PM

Howdy,

Its a 5.0, like as in Mustang GT 5.0. More stuff on the aftermarket than u can shake a stick at!!

Just found this site, very cool, my '97 f150 4.2L decided to detonate the bottom end at only 60k miles. i have a crown vic 4.6L v8 trans. ecm and wiring, i have never done a 4.2-4.6 motor before, will this be a legitimate swap? How much difference is there in truck 4.6 and crown vic 4.6 ? Do '99 up crown vics 4.6 have the better flowing heads like mustangs? thanks for your help
