Question Question about engine replacement

Need help with questions about engines.
What comes with a remanufactured engine?
4.2L
Will I get new plugs, wires etc?
What about the oil that comes in it? How soon should it be changed?
Should I have any problems? And should I expect that the gaskets on this one will be good?
Any help is appreciated.

You won't get new plugs, wires, etc. You will get a rebuilt block with pistons, sometimes new rods, definately new main bearings and re-worked heads if you buy a long block. You will need to re-use your oil pan, intake manifolds, fuel injectors, etc. Basically you get a block and heads.

Blackie, what Frank said is true.Ive never rebuilt a 4.2 but I do have one sitting in my shed with a rod thrown thru the oil pan.Anyway,I use to race alot and built my fair share of small block Chevy motors. You must follow the builders break in procedure to the letter. This means oil weight, first change, then changes after that.My philosiphy on breaking a motor in was however you are going to drive it break it in that way.I'm sure there are those out there that agree with me but ide still follow the builders instructions. If you find a good engine builder i'm sure you wont have anything to worry about.Stop working yourself up about this;just find a good builder and follow there break in instructions, use good oil,and by all means use Motorcraft 400S oil filters.Your motor will thank you!Good luck!

Most likely not. After the install they usually put in the oil. Some do it before puttinig in the motor.Just remember, use the weight oil they recommend and stick with it.And use Motorcraft filters!!!!!Who is doing the work?Where are you getting the motor from?

Thumbs up

Jimsblackie, I am in the final stages of this very same thing......had to put a crate motor (ordered from Ford) in a 97 v-6 in my wifes uncles' truck. The engine comes with oil, pan, heads, plugs, filter, water pump, you have to use your old intake (upper and lower), front accessories, headers (comes with new gaskets), swap over misc. sensors, dip stick etc. MAKE NO MISTAKE, this was a major pain in the a$$ I had to take the clutch off just to get the old motor out!!!! banged up the a/c condensor coil ($100 at the j/y ) at any rate, the worst part is/has been trying to get the "quick" connect coupling for the hydraulic clutch to go in

This is the only thing I have left to do.......besides fire it off and get out of my sight!!!!!!! Also, the new motor comes with oil (as prev. stated and the pump has been primed!!!!) HTH some, Brad

P.S. If any one can tell me how that little bahstahd fitting is supposed to go in to the tranny I would be very much appreciative

I hear ya!
Did the truck in question have the coolant leak/gasket replacement problem? That was the problem with mine. Coolant leak, gasket replaced, and then engine failure. Under 80k miles.
Thank you for the info on the motor order. I found it very interesting that you had to remove the clutch to install motor, because we clearly asked that the clutch be adjusted(or whatever they do to this kind of clutch) when they replaced the motor. Go to pick it up, they hadn't even bothered to check clutch. So now this will have to be a seperate visit to the shop, and that really makes me mad! I am getting afraid to trust anyone for anything!
Thanks again!

blown V-6, BAD gasket

I have a 97 XLT supercab with the V6 and 95K miles that has just blew. I am a little upset with Ford and would like to see them take care of this problem. They recognized the poorly engineered gasket several years ago, before our trucks reached enough miles for the gasket to deteriorate. There seems to be a lot of us out there with less that a hundred thousand miles and having to replace engines. This is ridiculous. Has anyone had any luck with Ford in getting this taken care of?

Jim, no this motor was "fubar" from lack of oil, although it was leaking from the water pump as well (hard to tell with all of the oil on the motor/trans/exhaust/etc.......Pisses me off that somebody, would not take 30 seconds to check the oil level in this thing.....when I went to drain it (because Ford would not take the core motor back with oil still in it, odd being as they sent one WITH oil in it...) any way, they was MAYBE 2 quarts of oil in it um hello, I figured out why that rod was knocking like "HAIL"......unbelievable........anyway.....HTH . Brad

I work for a electrical contractor and every truck we run is Ford. We have 30 + truck. Some are 95 to 03's. The 4.2 we have most of them have 100,000+ miles on them. As far as I know they dont leak anything at all. The troubles that have out of most of them is brakes and hare to shift (5spd). They done do the best job of takeing care of them. Like oil changes, coolent, filters, ect. Maybe we have been lucky(really lucky).
